Essential functions (job duties):

The Department of Oncology at Wayne State University School of Medicine and the Population Studies and Disparities Research Program of the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute (KCI), an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, invites applications for a tenure track position.

This position in the Population Studies and Disparities Research Program (PSDR). PSDR is committed to identifying key genetic, molecular, environmental and behavioral risk factors underlying disease onset and progression to reduce risk and improve diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes with an emphasis on reducing and/or eliminating cancer health disparities among populations contained within our catchment area. This program includes 28 members from 11 departments and 3 schools at Wayne State University (WSU). Program members actively collaborate with members of the other Karmanos research programs: Molecular Imaging, Molecular Therapeutics, and Tumor Biology and Microenvironment. KCI/WSU house the Metropolitan Detroit Cancer Surveillance System, the population-based cancer registry covering the tri-county metropolitan Detroit area since 1973. In addition, the Detroit Research on Cancer Survivors (ROCS) cohort, the largest cohort of African American Cancer survivors serves as a research resource available to faculty. Targeted research areas for this position include, but are not limited to cancer screening/early detection; cancer prevention and control; and cancer risk and survivorship. We encourage applications from researchers whose work is grounded in rigorous epidemiologic methods and population-based research.

The successful candidate will join a dynamic and collegial academic setting and receive a competitive start-up package, state-of-the-art core facilities, and an environment that supports multidisciplinary collaboration. Candidates are expected to develop an independent, externally funded research program, contribute to departmental activities, and participate in teaching and trainee mentorship. Mid-level and senior scientists are encouraged to apply.

Qualifications:

We are seeking a candidate who is highly collaborative to add to the outstanding expertise and research of our team of multidisciplinary faculty across the university and cancer center. All candidates must have a PhD or equivalent in public health, epidemiology, or other similar scientific discipline with an outstanding record of high impact research commensurate with level. Potential candidates must demonstrate a commitment to reducing health disparities and will be expected to conduct research that is responsive to the needs and disparities within KCI’s 46-county catchment area in Michigan, with the goal of achieving health equity. Although the candidate will be based in Detroit, a vibrant urban center with a long history of innovation and activism, there is ample opportunity to advance research with regional and statewide reach. Rank commensurate with credentials.
