Description

Job Summary

Under immediate supervision, perform strenuous physical labor of routine grounds/landscape maintenance work and/or construction, maintenance and repair work.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (may perform other duties as assigned)

  • Perform any of a variety of tasks involving physical strength and agility, such as with angle grinders, chainsaws and other hand tools, including, but not limited to, grass mowing equipment other yard tools.

  • Perform routine labor/maintenance work in an outdoor setting such as removing debris, shrubbery, overgrowth and miscellaneous items from walkways, alleys, corridors and other areas.

  • Clean assigned areas and equipment, including, but not limited to, hand held tools.

  • Assist with erecting, repairing, and constructing wooden and metal fences.

  • Utilize common hand tools, including, but not limited to, wheelbarrows, shovels, rakes, and other tools used to perform routine groundwork/landscape.

  • This position requires enrollment in a collaborative training program between the City of Detroit and Detroit At Work.

  • Employees in this position will spend approximately 50% of their time in training programs, suited to their educational needs and career aspirations.

  • Employees will spend the other 50% of their time performing work as described in this specification.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications (required):

• Ability to read and write English and to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Basic knowledge of commonly used hand tools.

• Basic knowledge of tools and materials commonly associated with landscaping/ground maintenance work.

• Skill in utilizing common gardening hand tools and equipment.

• Ability to understand and follow oral/written directions.

• Ability to display physical strength and dexterity.

• Ability to perform all the duties of the classification.

• Ability to work effectively as part of a work group/team.

Licenses, Certifications, and Other Special Requirements:

• Candidates considered for placement in this classification may be subject to a Criminal Background Investigation based on the requirements of the position.

• Employees are required to wear appropriate safety attire in accordance with departmental and OSHA safety regulations.

Physical Demands

The employee generally engages in light to strenuous physical activity which may include operating machinery, motor vehicles, and using tools for an extended period of time. The employee is expected to move about and ascend/descend (e.g. stairs, ladders, trees etc.) to accomplish tasks. The employee must be able to lift, push, pull, and carry up to (90) pounds.

Work Environment

Work is performed in indoor and outdoor environments with potential exposure to conditions which may include fumes, extreme heat and cold, wetness, loud noise, dust, inclement weather and hazardous chemicals. Some work requires travel to meetings, conferences, and other work sites with exposure to seasonal weather conditions.

Skills for Life Program

The Environmental Technician position is within the Skills for Life program. Employees in this role will spend 3 days per week conducting landscape/grounds maintenance work and/or park and tree maintenance to beautify the city’s parks and neighborhoods. The other 2 days per week will be spent completing education and training activities for career readiness; such as obtaining a CDL license, learning a specific skill or obtaining a GED. The purpose of this training will be to get placed into high-demand occupations.

Most participants will be in the program between 6 and 12 months depending upon the educational and training track selected. After participants complete the training/education portion and earn a credential, they can remain in the Skills for Life program for up to two additional months while receiving support to secure a long-term, full-time employment opportunity that pays at a minimum of $15/hour.

Evaluation for eligibility to participate in the Skills for Life program is required through Detroit at Work.

Employees are required to wear appropriate safety attire in accordance with departmental and OSHA safety regulations.

RETIREMENT BENEFITS

City Employees Retirement System

As a regular City employee you automatically become a member of the General Retirement System. This entitles you to a retirement allowance after:
