Associate Director, Advising Training and Development, University Advising Center

Wayne State University is searching for an experiencedAssociate Director, Advising Training and Development, University Advising Centerat its Detroit campus location.

Position Purpose:

The Associate Director, Advising Training and Development will lead the onboarding, training, and development programming, within the University Advising Center, for WSU's 90+ professional academic advising and coaching staff. Collaborate with the Director of University Advising, this position is charged with direct oversight for the onboarding, training, communication, and professional development needs of Wayne State University’s primary-role academic advisors and coaches. The position involves assessing the training needs of the WSU advising community based on an understanding of the competencies, values, and skills of the profession, as well as the current and evolving degree requirements, policies, and student success initiatives of the university. The position also works to maintain and support advisors’ daily use of advising technology, to communicate timely student intervention opportunities, and to uphold a supportive and well-connected advising/coaching community through various communication and recognition strategies.

Essential Functions:

Develop, lead, and administer year-round advisor professional development and training programs using in-person, virtual, and online formats.

Manage the program administration, delivery and set up to provide a supportive delivery of new advisor onboarding, and coordinate Level 1 and Level 2 certification including advisor completion and maintenance tracking.

Manage advisor listserv communications including weekly programming promotions and advising intervention and outreach submissions/proposals.

Deliver campus-wide Stars 2.0 and Cognos report training to campus community and respond to support tickets/questions as needed. Collaborate with C&IT developers to communicate, troubleshoot and resolve platform technology concerns and enhancement requests.

Administer advisor needs assessment and overall training program assessments.

Manage advisor training calendar, directory, website, and Advising Training Academy (ATA) Canvas sites.

Subject matter expert of current national academic advising research, trends, models, and approaches to ensure high quality program design and program compliance.

Collaborate with the Director to develop and deliver campus-wide advisor consulting and collaboration initiatives.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s degree

Bachelor’s degree in education, instructional design, business, communications or another related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience: Specialist (minimum 5 years of job-related experience)

Minimum 5 years’ experience in academic advising required.

Experience leading a training and development program, preferably within Higher Education.

Prior experience supervising and managing direct reports.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Course Design:

Knowledge of current course design, assessment, and teaching strategies in a higher education environment. Experience utilizing backward course design and universal design for learning.

Experience in collaborating with faculty to develop and implement learning outcomes and use analytical tools to identify the pedagogical needs of courses.

Experience applying instructional design methodology and principles to the design, delivery, and evaluation of courses in all modalities.

Technical:

Ability to develop training programs that comply with ADA accessibility standards and techniques, as they pertain to online materials within higher education.

Demonstrated experience and competence with instructional technologies.

Proficient in the use of MS Office Suite including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.

Proficient skills in Microsoft Teams

Communication:

Demonstrated ability to effectively consult with faculty and administrators from across the disciplines and with both technical and non-technical audiences.

Interprets and communicates information, ideas, and instructions clearly, accurately, and persuasively both verbally and in writing including materials intended for distribution.

Exceptional ability to effectively communicate processes, explain terms, concepts, and technology in a clear and understandable manner, visually, verbally and in writing.

Preferred qualifications:

Master’s degree preferred.

Demonstrated program design, editing, proofreading, planning, implementation and delivering training or other educational/professional materials. Successful online and/or hybrid teaching experience in higher education.

Experience in collaborating with faculty to develop and implement learning outcomes and use analytical tools to identify the pedagogical needs of courses.

Experience working with various technologies such as Stars, Cognos, Banner, and CMS.
