At the Office of Auditor of State (AOS) we're on the front lines of public service, working to ensure taxpayer money is correctly and efficiently spent. AOS is the Post-Audit agency of the State of Iowa with overall responsibility for the financial and compliance audits of state and local governmental units. These include state agencies, institutions and universities, and counties, cities and school districts. Work is performed in accordance with generally accepted government auditing standards, established by the U.S. General Accounting Office, which includes generally accepted auditing standards established by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

The duties of aSenior Auditorare performed under the general supervision of a Manager and periodically under the direction of an experienced in-charge auditor. A senior auditor performs complete audits of small and medium entities, acts as auditor-in-charge on audit engagements as assigned and assists supervisor by performing such duties as instructing employees, answering questions, distributing and balancing the workload and checking work. A senior auditor also reviews reports of lower level auditors for technical soundness, including coverage of law violations, mathematical and accounting accuracy and arrangement of subject matter.

The educational requirement is a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance and experience equal to two years of full-time work in auditing or accounting. Governmental auditing experience is preferred. Beyond the basic educational requirement, all auditors are expected to exhibit a positive, professional demeanor, demonstrate good communication skills and possess the ability to work well with people.

Desired qualifications/skills include:

• Flexibility, initiative and good problem solving abilities.

• Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.

• Ability to plan and organize work to handle multiple projects and meet deadlines.

Other desirable qualifications include CPA, CIA, CFE, MBA, MPA or related professional accomplishment. The Auditor's Office is exempt from the state's merit system administered by the Department of Administrative Services. Therefore, it is not necessary for candidates to complete the certification process that is required for state offices under the merit system.

Continuing professional development is required and is achieved through on-the-job training, in-house training programs and outside training courses and seminars. The Auditor's Office supports staff members in their efforts to obtain the professional certification of Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) by providing a tuition reimbursement program for courses or certificate review classes related to obtaining these certificates. We also encourage staff members to be active participants of the accounting profession and promote membership and participation in professional organizations.

Overnight travel is required. Time spent traveling and away from home varies according to each individual audit assignment. Reimbursement for transportation, meal and lodging expenses will be provided according to state guidelines. It is the policy of the Office of Auditor of State to conduct background checks on all finalist candidates prior to any offer of employment.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in accounting or finance, and experience equal to two years of full-time work in auditing, accounting, or finance.

Additional Qualification Requirements

Travel, including overnight travel, may be required for positions in this class. Employees must arrange transportation to and from assigned work areas.
