Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Candidate will lead a multi-skilled team of engineers for the technical delivery of modules within Reactor Island and the wider power station to achieve our mission of providing clean affordable energy for all.The lead role will involve understanding the full lifecycle of the systems within our modules, developing the design maturity, generating arrangements, and determining the associated manufacturing and installation methods required to deliver the Power Plant.Applicants should have familiarity with the application of codes and standards through design, requirements management and application of systems engineering methods as well as experience of collaboration with cross-functional departments with both internal and external stakeholders.Experience within the design of nuclear mechanical systems is highly desirable, but not mandated. Applicants with wider industry experience in the application of modularisation and mechanical design of process systems will also be considered.Lead Engineering Expertise:

  • Provide expert technical guidance and direction in the design, analysis, and optimisation of mechanical systems, equipment, and components in modules within Reactor Island and the wider power station.

  • Lead and mentor a growing team of mechanical engineers, fostering a collaborative and innovative environment while promoting professional growth and development.

  • Ensure that quality is maintained throughout the project lifecycle by undertaking appropriate technical reviews and providing the required inputs to the main technical review gates.

  • Design & Innovation:

  • Drive the development of innovative mechanical solutions and concepts, integrating the latest technologies and industry best practices to enhance our product in line with company governance.

  • Collaboration:

  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including systems, components, layout and CAD teams, process & electrical engineers, project managers, and external stakeholders, to ensure seamless integration of mechanical systems within modular arrangements.

  • Regulatory Compliance:

  • Apply industry guidance, regulations, codes, and standards related to mechanical engineering and CDM.

  • Ensuring all designs are delivered in line with good requirements management delivery, documented assumptions and verified.

  • Working with due regard to Health, Safety and Environment to ensure that work complies with all necessary corporate, business, and legislative requirements and procedures.

  • Technical Documentation:

  • Prepare detailed engineering specifications, review drawings, and documentation for mechanical systems, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and adherence to company and industry standards.

  • Lead and mentor a growing team of mechanical engineers, fostering a collaborative and innovative environment while promoting professional growth and development.Manage a cross-functional integrated project team of stakeholders to deliver the programme successfully.

Required Skills (Technical Competency):

  • Qualified to degree level or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.

  • Proven experience (10+ years) in mechanical engineering roles, with a strong focus on designing and managing complex mechanical systems.

  • Chartered Engineer (or working towards Chartership).

  • Design Experience:

  • Proven experience in the delivery of significant design programmes to time, cost, and quality.

  • Experience in leading the development of design solutions using a Robust Design methodology.

  • Display an understanding of how all components within a project scope integrate and interface with one another and can demonstrate the ability to effectively manage these elements, ensuring successful project outcomes from conception to site execution.

  • Logical problem-solving and strong engineering design decision-making will be crucial in this role to arrive at the optimal arrangement and design of the modular solution.

  • Familiarity with relevant industry standards and regulations pertaining to mechanical engineering.

  • Systems Engineering Understanding:

  • The role will require skills and experience in the following areas:

  • Requirements management

  • Stakeholder management

  • Technical and programme risk management

  • Design for through-life operation, fault scenarios and EMIT

  • Commercial Design Review process

  • Communication Skills:

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate and communicate effectively across various departments and levels of the organization.

  • Technical report authoring experience

  • Commitment to project and company goals, with a focus on delivering results.

  • Nuclear Industry Experience:

  • Experience with the design of nuclear process equipment or other process industry mechanical systems is desirable, but not mandated. Applicants with wider industry experience in the integration/design of safety-critical systems and the application of a modular build philosophy will also be considered.

  • Experience of ONR other nuclear regulatory technical assessment guides and safety assessment principles would be advantageous.

  • Construction & Constructability:

  • Experience working on construction projects is desirable but not mandated including the constructability assessments, schedule, or assembly sequencing of process plant equipment.

  • Familiarity with CDM regulations and processes.

  • An Oil & Gas Mechanical background is highly desirable.Knowledge of the application of risk management, data-driven manufacturing, installation process improvement and installation/construction schedules and planning are highly desirable.Experience within the design of nuclear mechanical systems is highly desirable, but not mandated.Applicants with wider industry experience in the application of modularisation and mechanical design of process systems will also be considered.
