Description of Job

Colorado Parks and Wildlife's Resource Stewardship Program is seeking to fill a temporary cultural resources technician position. This is a 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday, position and is based in north Denver. This position provides a great entrance into the working worlds of Cultural Resources, Archaeology, Historic Preservation, Conservation, Park Management, and GIS in the beautiful state of Colorado.

This position’s responsibilities will primarily include:

  • Assisting with coordination of cultural resource inventories, planning, interpretation, and management and will assist in compiling the results of archaeological surveys (site forms, reports, maps) for submittals related to Section 106 and other state and federal historic preservation laws.

  • This will include historical research, database management, GIS work, program planning, and administrative duties.

  • The Technician will conduct research on prehistoric and historic aspects of the park and write reports and summaries and will include preparation of GIS data/maps. The Technician will travel to state parks across Colorado to assess and monitor cultural resources.

  • Responsibilities will include communication with park staff regarding state and federal historic preservation compliance processes for cultural resources.

  • The Technician will assist in field inventories of other resources, including biological and geological, and conduct meetings with partners, volunteers, and contractors in the office and in the field.

  • The Technician will conduct other administrative tasks for the program, such as organizing/filing electronic and paper files.

There will be a field component using ESRI Field Maps to map resources on the parks and the applicant should be physically able and willing to hike and camp and have their own camping equipment (tent and sleeping bag).

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's degree and a background in history, archaeology, anthropology, park management, cultural resources management, GIS or related fields

  • Must be proficient with ArcGIS and Microsoft Office; experience using Excel, Word, and Access is required.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and reliable transportation.

  • Must be physically able, willing to hike and camp, and have own camping equipment (tent and sleeping bag).

  • The ability to work with autonomy, good organizational skills, as well as good written and oral communication skills are required.

  • Must have a valid driver's license.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Master's degree in archaeology.

  • At least 1 year of experience using ArcGIS software.

  • Experience with historical research and writing.

  • Experience with cultural resource inventory and management.

  • Basic understanding of Colorado Cultural Resource Management laws/regulations and public land management principles.

  • Experience with ArcGIS tools and maintaining/populating databases.

  • Ability to create GIS maps to illustrate on-the-ground natural resource conditions.

  • Knowledge of wildlife and vegetation known to inhabit Colorado.

  • Experience and familiarity with the use of ESRI Collector and ArcGIS Online is helpful.

  • Strong work ethic, be organized, and have the ability to work in a fast-paced setting both independently and on teams.

  • Ability to communicate information clearly and concisely, develop reports, and present information both orally and in writing.
