Job Summary

The Seizure Monitoring Technician provides 24-hour observation of patients continuously recorded with EEG and video via remote telemetry system. The Seizure Monitoring Technician maintains components of the EEG/video system to ensure integrity of equipment and communicates with staff and members of the Comprehensive Epilepsy team assigned to a patient regarding the patient's seizure status. The Seizure Monitoring Technician develops proficiency in clinical and electrical seizure identification, notification, and documentation. Assessment of equipment signal integrity and rudimentary maintenance of EEG study will be developed.

Essential Functions:

Provides visual observation of seizure patients, with continuous EEG recording, in view of live video feed (or at bedside depending on patient census). (30%) Identifies, notifies and documents EEG suspicious for convulsive seizure activity. (10%) Provides patient status reports to RN, END Technologists, Seizure Monitoring technicians, and physician care team. (10%) Maintains daily inter-personal relationships and communication with clinical team. (10%) Maintains equipment and data integrity, identifies major repairs, and provides a safe environment with EEG equipment. (10%) Provides basic patient and family orientation regarding EEG equipment in relation to seizure care team. (10%) Effectively understands the goals and implications of the continuous EEG study. (10%) Collaborates with END Technologist to enhance data collection techniques. (5%) Provides daily care to patients in stable condition under the supervision of a nurse or provider in the care team. (5%)

Education: High School Diploma or GED required.

Work Experience: One year of experience in the medical field, preferred.

Licenses: BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of general patient care during seizure activity. Knowledge of psychosocial needs of seizure patients and families. Knowledge of patient behavior and symptoms related to or associated with seizures. Ability to accurately identify, communicate, and document patient's condition. Ability to perform effectively in emergency situations. Ability to function as a team member and to communicate effectively with patient's family and team members. Knowledge of and ability to use all equipment needed for continuously recorded EEG patients. Ability to recognize a variety of EEG electrode placements, understand the diagnostic qualities of each electrode, and replace electrodes as needed. Demonstrated basic understanding of seizure disorders. Demonstrated proficiency in the standard department workflow in the EMR. Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel, preferred.
