TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION K509 Roadway Maintenance Tech I, II, III - Denton County in Denton, Texas

Performs highly complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: contract maintenance and/or material and process inspection; roadway maintenance and repair; operates light and heavy equipment; preventative and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.Essential Duties:Roadway Maintenance Tech I, II or III:Assists in identifying, repairing and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs basic welding as needed; as required uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products related to these activities.Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assists stranded motorists as required.Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.Determines placement of traffic control devices and installs/moves devices.Inspects barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standards.Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.Maintains picnic and rest areas, rights-of-way, maintenance yards and comfort stations.Move/picks up litter and roadway debris.Mows rights-of-way and picnic and rest areas; performs plant and landscape maintenance including trimming trees and brush.Operates complex heavy equipment such as a motor grader, large excavator, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self-propelled asphalt distributor, and profiling/milling machine.Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a half cubic yards or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper, and dump truck.Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yards or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including time-keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI.Maintains construction project records and processes related paperwork.Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.Assists with inspecting maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.Additional duties for a Roadway Maintenance Tech II or III to include:Serves as the only inspector on a small project.Assists in inspecting traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices; safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.Reviews plans, enters data and updates, stores and maintains plans, specifications, and estimate (PSE) documents and files; assists in PSE processing for letting, to include reproducing and distributing documents.Reviews proposed construction plans, specifications, and estimate (PSE) and supporting documents for accuracy and completeness to ensure compliance with state and federal laws, policies, procedures, and design guidelines.Identifies, repairs, and installs signs, delineators, mail box supports and posts; performs welding; and uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products.Inspects routine and non-routine maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and m intain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.Conducts tests of highway construction materials, makes calculations, and records results.Identifies, analyzes, and implements solutions for complex maintenance problems.Inspects materials, equipment, and production procedures in a manufacturing plant or at point of supply to ensure construction materials meet Department specifications.Works on a survey crew; operates survey instruments such as theodolite, transit and level, electronic distance meter, and total survey station.Additional duties for a Roadway Maintenance Tech III to include:Inspects traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices, safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.May serve as a work crew project lead ensuring work performed meets project specifications.Trains other employees.Inspects and processes damage claims.Verifies and processes maintenance contract inspection data to build work orders and request payment funding.Performs hand and/or computer-aided drafting, design and calculating work.Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
