DEL RIO - CITY OF Heavy Equipment Operator - Gas in DEL RIO, Texas

JOB SUMMARY: Under general direction of a supervisor, works on leaking gas mains, replacements, retirements and extensions of gas mains. Operates heavy motorized equipment used in the maintenance of a gas distribution system. Performs other related work as required. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Drives and operates dump truck or backhoe to job locations(s). Drives and operates backhoes equipment such as hydraulic jackhammer etc. to break pavement. Uncovers gas lines and opens trench(s) to install pipes. Required to assists crews in repairs as needed. Uses good judgment to work safely and use equipment properly. Hears clearly and interprets hand signals when working around equipment and in street and alley traffic, using proper safety precautions. Lifts and carries up to 100 pounds, and pulls, pushes, or drags up to 150 pounds of repair equipment or materials, and while hooking up backhoe or other repair equipment. Works in trenches and confined spaces. Climbs, crawls, kneels, squats, stoops, and bends freely when driving, operating backhoe, and participating in repairs. Sits or stands for extended periods of time while driving or participating in repairs. Works with live gas and gas pressure exceeding 45lbs psi Assists with meter sets and meter removals Helps loading and unloading pipe as needed Works in any gas leak emergency and crisis of low pressure. Participates on the rotational standby. Works after-hours, weekends, and holidays when needed. Performs other work as required. Individual will be responsible for the efficient ad safe operations, care and appearance of assigned equipment to include washing, checks and servicing. Reads instructions and writes reports; follows written and oral directions. Required to perform other duties as may be assigned by supervisors . DECISION MAKING Ability to interpret sometimes contradictory information to effectively solve problems. Ability to anticipate and prepare for the implications and consequences of situations and take appropriate action to be prepared for possible contingencies. Ability to think beyond the immediate issue to look at root cause of behavior/issue; use good judgment in appropriate sharing of information and maintaining confidentiality. Read, write, and comprehend documents, rules and regulations, and graphs. SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED: Receives supervision from Crew Leader, Assistant Gas Superintendent, and Gas Superintendent as applicable. Position has no formal assigned supervisory responsibility or authority. OTHER ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES Attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this position. Non-rotating, 28-hour work week, variable days and with possible work additional hours as needed. Employees are required to work in a professional environment as a teammate and frequently meet with co-workers and supervisors; employee is required to communicate in-person with the public during business hours. May be required to operate a city vehicle. During emergency response situations for our community, such as floods, the position may be tasked with additional duties as needed in emergency operations. WORKING CONDITIONS : The principal duties of this position are performed outdoors. Works outside in extreme weather conditions (very hot or cold). Works safely in close proximity to vehicle traffic. Frequent exposure (up to 80%) to dirt, dust, extremes of temperature and strong fumes and odors. Expose to hazards associated with equipment, natural gas, un-graded terrain. Exposure to hazardous surfaces, odors, fumes, gases and other conditions related to working with natural gas. The incumbents working conditions are typically loud. ALCOHOL AND DRUG TESTING POLICY: This position is subject to the City of Del Rios Alcohol and Drug Testing Policy which may include Pre-employment testing, Post-Accident Testing, Random Testing, Reasonable Suspicion Testing, Return to Duty Testing, and Follow-Up Testing. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education and Experienc : High School Diploma or equivalent. Two (2) years experience operating heavy motorized equipment. Required; must have a valid Class A Commercial Drivers License in good standing Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of mechanical operation and proper care of heavy equipment. Ability to skillfully and safely operate and care for assigned equipment in carrying out the business of the department and the city. Ability to interpret oral and written instructions and refers deviations, problems or unfamiliar situations to Supervisor for proper decisions and guidance. Ability to manage project workloads and meet deadlines in order to maintain efficiency within the department. Skilled in safety regulations, work practices and procedures. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, other departments, contractors and the general public Other Conditions of Employment: Able to obtain necessary Certificates of Competency as mandated by appropriate, regulating State/Federal Agency.
