Application Engineer
Job Description
We have made a significant investment in our Decatur site, starting up a new brass foundry and introducing a new alloy. Currently, we have 172 castings, and over the next few years, we will expand to approximately 1,000 different castings. This department is tasked with re-establishing machining processes for the next 800+ castings. This project has high visibility up to the board of directors, so the pressure and urgency are high. The department is primarily equipped with lathes, and this role involves programming, setting up, and running new parts, as well as documenting new processes.
Responsibilities
Improve existing machining processes to enhance safety, quality, delivery, and productivity.
Update process documentation to ensure accuracy and availability for operations.
Develop and implement processes for new product designs.
Actively participate in troubleshooting and root cause analysis of operational issues.
Train operations staff on new and existing machining processes.
Implement new technology as part of capital projects, maintaining task timelines.
Communicate and interact with all organizational levels to drive improvements.
Essential Skills
Experience with CNC lathe and CNC programming.
Ability to function independently on a lathe, including program setup and running parts.
Experience programming for production machine shop volume.
Robotics/automation experience (e.g., x, y axis or 6 axis).
Strong collaboration and teamwork skills.
Experience working with metal, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and new product development.
Basic manual programming, selecting cutting tools, and part workholding.
2+ years of relevant experience preferred.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience with G and M codes, Fanuc controls.
Experience with CAD/CAM programs for CNC programming (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, MasterCAM).
Experience machining metal parts, particularly brass.
Troubleshooting and quality review skills.
Comfortable with dry cutting parts (no coolant usage).
Work Environment
This is a first shift position in a large machine shop. You will spend 90% of your time on the floor working with machines and operations and engineers, and the remaining time documenting new processes in the office. The first shift hours are from 7 am to 3 pm, with most of the team staying until 4 pm. There are also second and third shift options. Occasional overtime may be required, but no one is forced to work excessive hours. Flexibility to move between shifts may be needed based on machine requirement
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $40.00 - $50.00
