U.S. Army Reserve Command Safety and Occupational Health Specialist in Darien, Illinois

Summary About the Position: This position is with the 416th Theater Engineer Command, 416th Mission Support Element located at Darien, Illinois. Responsibilities Conduct surveys/inspections throughout all phases of exercises/operations. Maintain the quality of Safety Programs; make recommendations for improvements. Formulate, develop, organize, execute, and assess the Command Units, their subordinate elements, and associated activities. Research, study, and evaluate operations and risks that occur during tactical, combat, field operations, and exercises. Work with Supervisors on correcting safety issues through engineer controls, i.e. personal protective clothing/equipment. Provide technical safety advice to a variety of audiences. Conduct investigations, reporting, and analysis of off-duty injury and property damage accidents as identified for training and tactical accidents. Provide staff support to subordinate commands and serve as the senior professional and technical consultant on all safety matters. Coordinate with other activities, i.e. Fire Protection, Medical, Law Enforcement, etc., to execute program objectives. Speak for, and represent, the Command on committees and councils dealing with safety program matters. Approve short- and long-range plans for the Safety Office to include identifying and preparing budget input for Command Operating Budget cycles and current budget year executions. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1.) Managing safety or occupational health program elements; 2.) Developing and recommending safety and occupational health programs or policies to higher level officials; 3.) Applying safety and occupational health laws, regulations, principles, theories, practices, and procedures to advise on or resolve technical matters dealing with occupational safety and health requirements; 4.) Evaluating existing safety programs or inspecting workplaces to determine possible hazards; 5.) Applying safety and occupational health knowledge to reduce or control hazards; and 6.) Training of workers, supervisors, managers, or other safety and occupational health personnel in safety or occupational health subjects. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Accountability Oral Communication Public Safety and Security Safety and Health Safety and Occupational Health (SOH) Hazard Control Written Communication Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-11). Education Additional Information Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration. You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. One year trial/probationary period may be required. Direct deposit of pay is required. Selection is subject to restrictions resulting from Department of Defense referral system for displaced employees.
