JOB TITLE: Psychiatric Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner

DEPARTMENT: Medical Staff

CLINCAL SUPERVISOR: Medical Director

JOB SUMMARY:

The Psychiatric Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner is certified by the State Board of Nursing to provide psychiatric mental health services under the direction of the supervising physician. The CRNP is responsible for evaluating acutely hospitalized psychiatric patients, providing a differential diagnosis and pharmacology for treatment. The CRNP follows these patients throughout their hospitalization, in collaboration with the treating physician, participates in daily treatment team, and establishing behavioral treatment goals in a manner consistent with the philosophy and objectives of The Hughes Center.

Job Specifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to demonstrate competency in the criteria listed in this job description as well as the criteria established by the medical staff. The specifications listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and ability to meet the minimum requirements for this position. The CRNP must be available to provide care for the population congruent to their certification.

Education: Certified NP in the State of Virginia with 2 years relevant clinical experience. Previous experience with behavioral health patients highly preferred.

Experience: Two years clinical experience, preferably working with behavioral health patients.

Licensure/Certification: Certified by the American Nurse’s Credentialing Center (ANCC) or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPCB)

Knowledge: Must possess relevant clinical knowledge of the medical and psychiatric needs of all age groups, including age specific growth and development, limit setting, behavior management, and CPR training.

Supervision Received: Supervising Physician

Supervision Exercised: None

Line of Promotion: Clinical to Administrative Duties

Environmental Conditions: Exposure to psychiatric patients who may exhibit unpredictable and impulsive behavior. Potential for exposure to communicable diseases, blood and body fluids, and other hazardous waste. The CRNP works in a behavioral health environment.

Physical Requirements: Ability to communicate verbally and in writing. Physical agility to manage patients. Ability to push, pull, and lift up to 40 pounds. Intermittent sitting, standing, walking, bending, and stooping. Drug and alcohol free as evidenced by negative results of post-offer, pre-employment urine drug screen.

Job Classification: Exempt; Work hours vary based on patient volume and include day, evening, night, weekend, and holiday coverage.
