Johnson & Johnson is currently seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer to join our Abiomed Engineering team located in Danvers, MA.

Responsibilities:

  • Play a critical role in the development and design of life-saving medical devices within Abiomed – J&J MedTech.

  • Design of medical device console and major portions of a functional system incorporating factors from industrial design, human-factors engineering, mechanical engineering, and contextual workflow in clinical environments.

  • Utilize strong technical background and expertise to provide technical guidance and support to the design team.

  • Take ownership of projects and drive them from concept to completion, ensuring all deadlines and milestones are met.

  • Research, plan, design, and verify mechanical and/or electromechanical products and systems.

  • Conduct thorough research and analysis to understand market needs and trends and incorporate them into product design.

  • Create and evaluate prototypes to generate concept and model approval.

  • Integrate electronic components with mechanical designs, including design for EMC.

  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements and standards.

  • Design to meet formal product requirements, including IEC 60601-1.

  • Apply drafting practices, GD&T, 1D tolerance analysis and 3D analysis.

  • Prepare documentation in accordance with relevant internal SOPs and Design Control.

  • Take a leadership role in problem-solving and troubleshooting, addressing any issues that may arise during the design and development process.

  • Identify and implement innovative solutions to improve product design and performance.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including R&D, Quality, and Manufacturing to ensure seamless integration of design and development processes.

  • Interact with suppliers, participate in DFM and DFA processes to access component and assembly manufacturability.

  • May be responsible for the transfer from R&D to manufacturing.

  • Mentor and develop team members, providing guidance and support to foster their growth and success.

  • Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders, providing updates and progress reports.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Engineering degree and 12 years of experience in mechanical product development, or Master of Engineering degree and 8 years of experience in mechanical product development.

  • Extensive experience designing user-centered medical consoles and capital medical equipment.

  • Experience in developing capital medical devices from prototype to production considering application, cost, weight, performance, thermodynamics, reliability, manufacturing, assembly, and field serviceability.

  • Extensive experience leading complex mechanical system design at architectural level.

  • Experience in defining and working with mechanical subsystems within integrated modular architectures.

  • Ability to solve fit, form, and/or function issues and quickly generate solutions.

  • Experience in 3D modeling and knowledge of finite element analysis.

  • Proficiency with CAD software (e.g. SolidWorks, Creo).

  • Experience in test method development, process development, and design verification.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in design of molds, machining fixtures, handling, and assembly tools.
