Description
Summary:
Assists technical staff in preparing specimens and equipment for patient testing. Maintains proper inventory of reagents and control materials. Responsible for clerical functions associated with accessioning, result reporting, referred testing and customer service.
Responsibilities:
Insures specimen integrity while performing specimen accessioning and processing using established handling, labeling and processing procedures.
Prepares specimens for dispatch to reference laboratory, monitors send out pending test list and enters send out results into the laboratory information system. Processes, stains, and coverslips slides using automated equipment.
Prepares control material, calibrates pipets & thermometers, completes maintenance logs & performs instrument quality control, includes Centrifuge, reagent grade water, refrigerator and freezer temperature recording, etc.
Calls critical verified results, using laboratory computer system, when ordering physician and other results as needed. Answers phones and insures customer satisfaction.
Maintains reagent inventory, labels and stores reagents appropriately, dating when received, opened and when expires, and stores appropriately.
Files specimens, slides and reports for easy retrieval and discards specimen at proper intervals.
Performs specimen dispatch functions and/or phlebotomy, ensuring proper response time for specimen procurement. Schedules appointments as assigned.
Covers for Courier Coordinator functions, such as but not limited to supply orders, stat and nursing home courier pick ups.
Fulfills all compliance responsibilities related to the position.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Education: HS GRAD/EQUIVALENT
Other Information:
Required: Data entry required. Organizational and customer service skills.
Minimum Experience: zero to six months
Desired: Phlebotomy, medical terminiology. Associate's degree preferred.
Working Conditions:
Manual: significant manual skills/motor coord & finger dexterity
Occupational: Significant occupational risk
Physical Effort: Medium to Heavy effort. May exert up to 35 lbs. force
Physical Environment: Some exposure to dirt, odors, noise, human waste, etc.
