Characteristics of work
This is skilled manual work in a variety of tasks in the Department of Public Works, Crystal Springs, MS. The work involves performance of manual tasks that do require experience to achieve effective results. Assignments often include the use of hand tools and power operated devices and the occasional operation of light and medium-duty trucks and automotive equipment. The work is usually performed under limited supervision. Assignments and supervision are received from the Superintendent of Public Works or assistant, and the work is subject to review on the basis of results accomplished.
Examples of work *The following examples are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed in this position. The absence of specific statements of duties does not exclude those tasks from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment of the position. *
- Reads water meters and records consumption accurately and within time lines/dates established; locks meters when applicable; identifies residents illegally receiving water services; pulls meters and carries out water cut-offs as directed using hand held recorder.
- Performs manual tasks on street maintenance and construction; spreads, levels, and packs asphalt; pours and smoothes concretes; spreads gravel; and clears drainage facilities.
- Participates in the collection of trash and garbage; picks up and loads material on trucks and assists in its disposal.
- Assists in the installation and maintenance of water and sewer lines and facilities; digs trenches and ditches, back-fills and compacts trenches; assists in repairing leaks and breaks in service lines.
- Performs maintenance and a variety of groundskeeping tasks in muncipal recreation areas and other public property; mows grass, plants and prunes shrubbery; maintains facilities and playing fields.
- Operates a variety of standard hand tools, including a shovel, rake, wrenches, and others; operates power tools and light to medium-duty automotive equipment.
- Other duties as required.
Minimum requirements
- Ability to follow oral instructions and directions
- Considerable physical stamina to perform hard manual labor under adverse conditions.
- Ability to learn the standard methods, materials, and tools and equipment utilized in areas of work assignment.
- Ability to learn the work hazards and safety precautions associated with areas of assignment.
- Ability to learn the operation of a vareity of hand and power tools, small and medium sized trucks, tractors, and other power equipment.
- Possess communication skills in referring concerned citizens with questions on water bills to appropriate staff at water office.
- Insure actions are consistent and fair in dealing with citizens.
Must have a valid driver's license.
