POSITION SUMMARY The Coding Specialist position utilizes the acquired skill of the coding specialist to process patient information contained in the medical record, transforming it into categorized meaningful data. The coding specialist reviews patient information at all levels of care and assigns codes according to an established classification system. Through this process, the coding specialist generates an abstract displaying the patient's health history and current episode of care. This position generates information and data that can be used to study patterns of illness and injuries treated, for clinical, financial, and administrative purposes. They must work toward the achievement of the goals of the Cuyuna Regional Medical Center. POSITION QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience: Successful completion of an approved coding program and/or maintains the following coding credentials: CCA, CPC, CCS-P, CCS, CPC-H, CPC-P, or RHIT. Demonstrates skill and knowledge of ICD-9-CM and CPT/HCRCS coding guidelines and procedures. Demonstrates skill in using ICD-9-CM/CPT/HCRCS coding books and/or automated encoding systems. Successful completion of the medical terminology standard. License/Certificates: Individual has successfully completed an approved coding program and/or maintain the following coding credentials: CCA, CPC, CCS-P, CCS, CPC-H, CPC-P, or RHIT. Must obtain CEUs to maintain current credentials. Special Skills and Aptitudes: Requires flexibility and cooperation when dealing with medical staff and other hospital personnel. Maintains accuracy and attention to detail while meeting established turnaround goals. Communicates effectively, both orally and in writing. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES Reviews and qualitatively analyzes the content of each medical record. Assigns diagnosis and procedure codes following guidelines and standard practice procedures for ICD-10-CM classification system. Assign CPT/HCPCS codes as recognized by 3rd party payers. Follow sequencing guidelines to establish principal and secondary diagnoses and procedures. Assigns appropriate modifiers to further identify services performed. Abstract patient information from the medical record onto the computerized patient abstract database. Investigates errors and warnings from encoding software and corrects accordingly. Transmits information from the abstract to the billing system. Completes charge tickets and submits to business office and/or enters charges as appropriate per established processes. Maintains encoding software and coding books with updates when published. Participates in orientation and training of new employees into the coding function. Attends continuing education sessions to maintain and enhance coding skills. Participates in the concurrent review process and evaluates documentation concerns with nursing, physician, and other allied health professionals to increase coding accuracy and expedite the final coding process. Maintains a working knowledge of third party payer prospective payment system regulations to maximize reimbursement within guidelines and critical access guidelines.
