Reporting to the Finance Director, the Director of HR works closely with the Chancellor, vice chancellor, academic administrators and program directors, supervisors, faculty, and other university employees. The Director of HR additionally works with consultants and administrators on the Twin Cities campus, union and civil service representatives, and multiple campus vendors. The Director is responsible for managing the work of the University of Minnesota Crookston's human resource functions, including arranging for the provision of services relating to diversity and inclusion, recruitment, orientation, reassignment, promotion, termination, layoff, compensation administration, processing of grievances, employee/union relations, employee benefits, compliance with human resource policies, and supervision of human resource support staff. The director additionally provides consultation using analytical and technical skills and oversees the professional development of faculty and staff. Position Overview and Job Duties The position is a 12-month, full-time, annually renewable. The benefits package includes retirement, medical, dental, disability, and life insurance. Working environment: Hybrid (varying days in-office) Salary: $85,000 to $105,000 annually Essential Job Duties: Guide and oversee employee lifecycle activities: recruitment, hiring, onboarding, off-boarding, benefits, and compensation. Counsel and advise senior administrators, department heads, supervisors, and employees on HR policies, procedures, and best practices. Collaborate with the Office of Academic Affairs on faculty recruitment, negotiate the University Education Association-Crookston (UEA) contract, and participate in grievance proceedings. Foster a campus employment culture that promotes diversity and inclusivity, ensuring adherence to EEO/AA and ADA policies. Interpret civil service rules, bargaining agreements, policies, employment law, and government regulations. Coordinate compensation policies, job classification, and disciplinary action processes. Address employee relations issues, including coordinating the grievance process and serving on labor-management committees. Serve as the HRMS key contact for the UMC campus and Designated Key Administrator (DKA) for financial and operational misconduct. Supervise HR support staff, perform committee assignments as directed, and represent the university in community engagements. Qualifications Required (please include in your resume and cover letter): Bachelor's degree plus six years of work experience (preferably in Human Resources). Supervisory experience or previous HR leadership roles. Strong understanding of labor laws, collective bargaining agreements, and union relations. Demonstrated ability to handle complex employee relations issues, including investigations, disciplinary actions, and conflict resolution. Familiarity with employment laws and regulations (federal, state, and local levels). Committed to promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace. Preferred: Advanced Degree in HR or related field. Experience working in higher education, healthcare, government, or nonprofit settings. Certifications in SHRM-SCP or SPHR or certifications specific to labor and employee relations. Excellent interpersonal, team-building, and communication skills.
