Description of Work

This position will function as a Transportation Supervisor I within the Special Maintenance Operations Group. The primary purpose of this position will be to plan, coordinate, direct and supervise force account construction projects, road maintenance operations, and pavement preservation activities throughout the eight counties in Division 2. This includes AST seals, Grade Base and Drain Projects, major and minor shoulder construction, paving by state forces, and emergency maintenance operations. This position will be responsible for directing and supervising fully operated equipment contractors. Employee will be expected to carry out the NCDOT Safety Program and NC VIP (Valuing Individual Performance), train new employees, maintain employee time, complete FR-1101 Job Reports, and other record keeping as required. Employee will be expected to use a computer for documentation, calculations, figuring grades and elevations, and the use of NCDOT programs such as VIP, SAP, CARS, AMS, etc. Employee in this position will be required to calculate quantities of materials needed for various types of projects such as; Asphalt surface treatments, and construction projects This includes but is not limited to: asphalt, aggregate and emulsion quantities. Workers will be exposed to all types of weather conditions and expected to work on uneven surfaces and slopes.This position is subject to emergency call back work, night work, weekend work, work in adverse weather and other extreme circumstances.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Experience in roadway maintenance and repair in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, asphalt patching, snow and ice removal, crack sealing, full depth patching or pothole patching

  • Experience in record keeping, such as tracking employee and equipment time and recording quantities of materials used

  • Experience supervising subordinates and directing the daily activities of a work crew

  • Experience in Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety Policy and Practices

  • Experience in planning and organizing work

Additional Expectations:

Employee will need the ability to supervise work crews. Employee will need the ability to promote safe work environment. Employee will need the ability to maintain working knowledge of all operating procedures. Employee will be expected to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Employee will be expected to maintain effective working relations with other employees and the general public. Safety toe footwear will be needed. Must operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and six years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience. Experience must be related to functional area of the work that the position will supervise.
