Job Description

Residence Manager

Responsible for managing a residence hall (Council Bluffs) including supervising employees and ensuring appropriate, safe, and enriching environment for students who are enrolled in programs at Iowa School for the Deaf (ISD) (www.iowaschoolforthedeaf.org) and Iowa Educational Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired (IESBVI) (www.iesbvi.org).

DESCRIPTION:

  • Recruit, train, and supervise employees including substitute employees and make recommendations on their employment. Schedules staff. Maintains records for payroll. Provides support, feedback, advice, and direction to staff on a daily basis and regular formal evaluations.

  • Assists and participates in the planning, organizing and implementing staff development activities to enhance the skills and abilities of the staff working within the department.

  • Ensures that dormitory staff consistently and constantly implement quality student programming – disciplinary and enrichment. Monitors effectiveness of programming and makes adjustments as needed.

  • Develops and maintains contact with parents of the students served. Makes contacts and/or sends written information to parents as appropriate. Works to establish and foster a positive working relationship with parents. Maintains positive public relationships with parents, related individuals, community members and other constituents.

  • Provides leadership in the program development, care, and discipline of students during non-classroom hours. Counsels students concerning emotional, social, and academic problems. Researches students’ backgrounds and uses information to develop specialized programs, work assignments, and activities to aid in the development and growth of students outside the traditional classroom environment.

  • Provides reports as required.

  • Inspects dormitories regularly for repairs, sanitation problems, and safety issues. Requests needed repairs, modifications, and cleanings. Ensures dormitories are clean and well maintained.

  • Performs other duties as required.

Hours: Sunday – Thursday (2:30 P.M.-10:30 P.M.) extended hours expected; occasional weekends. Expected start date August 2024.

A successful candidate will bring or have the ability and desire to learn:

  • Must have strong American Sign Language skills

  • Passion for pursuing common goals in pursuit of public service

  • Strong written and face-to-face communication skills including developed interpersonal skills

  • Experience working with individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind, or visually impaired.

  • Experience working within a K-12 educational setting a plus.

Salary Range - $48,450-$73,765 for 200 work days

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in art, the behavioral/social sciences, industrial therapy, music, occupational therapy, physical education, recreation, rehabilitation, therapeutic recreation, or other closely related fields and experience equal to two years of full-time professional work in an activities program;

OR

an equivalent combination of graduate education in one of the above fields and professional qualifying experience substituting a maximum of thirty semester hours for one year of the required experience;

OR

additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education in any equivalent combination on the basis of one year of experience for each thirty-semester hours (or equivalent) of education to a maximum of four years;

OR

employees withcurrentcontinuous experience in the state executive branch that includes experience equal to eighteen months of full-time work as an Activities Specialist 1.
