Fairview Health Services Medical Assistant Learner in Cottage Grove, Minnesota

Overview

The Medical Assistant Learner performs medical assistant tasks and responsibilities while studying toward a Medical Assistant Diploma, within limits of current training; work is guided and overseen by a Lead Medical Assistant and Clinic Manager. May assist Physician and Advanced Practice Professional with procedures and treatments as trained and directed.

The Medical Asst - Clinic Learner is responsible for adhering to all safety standards, policies, procedures, and practice guidelines, promoting teamwork with all members of the health care team, maintaining complete, timely and accurate clinical documentation for each patient while continually looking for opportunities to improve processes and workflow.

Upon successful completion of the MA program, the goal is to transfer into a Medical Assistant position with the organization.

Additional Details:

Learners work a .6 FTE (48 hours per two-week pay period) at the clinic and must be accepted into Rasmussen (the Eagan Campus) after receiving a job offer. Rasmussen's Diploma program is one-year long. Starting wage while working in the clinic is $20/ hour and as Learners progress in their program they will receive quarterly increases ending in $21/hour in the fourth quarter.

Learners will need to pursue the benefits associated with the program that are crafted to help offset the cost including:

  • Sponsorship funds - $4,500 in funds to assist with offsetting education expenses. A Workforce Development point of contact will request the first quater tutiion statement from Rasmussen and will send payment directly to Rasmussen, if the amount is less than $4,500 the remainder can be put toward the second statement and so on until the $4,500 is used up. Sponsorship funds are the only benefits administered by the Workforce Development contact, all other benefits are the Learner's responsibility.

  • Tuition assistance – eligible for up to $5,250 per year with a one-year work commitment.

  • Discount - Rasmussen offers a 20 percent discount on tuition as a Fairview Health Servies employee.

Responsibilities Job Description

Duties will be performed as they are taught, and competency has been obtained in the following areas:

Delivers care as delegated by the physician/authorized practitioner or RN, to assigned patient population, or individual patient.

  • Reviews patient chart prior to arrival

  • Follows the patient’s plan of care.

  • Readies patient room for visit, setting up necessary equipment, instruments, supplies and sterile filed as appropriate.

  • Rooms patient with friendly greeting utilizing AIDET and 2 patient identifiers; prepares them for visit; coordinates patient flow into exam rooms in preparation for the visit; gathers, verifies and documents pertinent data (chief complaint, medical histories, vitals, medications, allergies) from patient.

  • Communicates with patients, providers, and other clinic staff to provide excellence in patient care experience, including pre and post appointment.

  • Performs basic procedures and tests including point of care testing, vision tests, injections, preparation of specimens, dressing changes

  • Assists Provider with examination, treatment, and basic procedures as necessary.

  • Ensures exam rooms are always stocked with supplies. Cleans and disinfects treatment rooms after use, appropriately disposing of used equipment and supplies, removing, cleaning, and storing medical devices and equipment and remaking exam table with clean paper.

Communicates effectively with other members of the health care team.

  • Documents care in the medical record.

  • Communicates verbal and written information in a clear, concise, accurate, and timely manner.

  • Uses communication approaches appropriate to patient/family needs.

  • Respect and ensures the confidentiality of all information regarding patients, staff members or Fairview business issues. Shares information only with those who need to know.

Demonstrates ability to provide care or service adjusting approaches to reflect developmental level of population served .

  • Partners with patient/caregiver in care.

  • Check details: validate and verify information.

  • Communicates in a respectful manner.

  • Ensures a safe, secure environment.

  • Individualizes plan of care to meet patient needs.

  • Modifies clinical interventions based on population served.

  • Provides patient education based on assessment of learning needs of patient/care-giver.

Qualifications

Required

Education

High School diploma or equivalent.

Must also meet the following conditions:

  • Upon job offer, must be eligible for admission/enrollment in the Medical Assistant Diploma Program at Rasmussen University; the partner education institution selected by Fairview. Proof of enrollment may be requested.

  • Must maintain full time enrollment and passing grades in coursework.

Experience

Minimum: Basic business office skills and computer skills

Preferred: Knowledge of medical terminology

License/Certification/Registration:

AHA BLS – or obtain within 12 weeks of hire date.

The Medical Assistant Learner will display exceptional customer service, professional public relations and communication skills and the ability to prioritize and work with a fluctuation in workload while working independently. Will demonstrate focus on customer service/patient experience with every interaction, exhibit the ability to work as an effective team member to provide exceptional care, utilize critical thinking skills, embrace change, and engage in ongoing process improvement. Will have the aptitude to keyboard / utilize computer programs. Must be flexible to work at various locations and times.
