Nueces County Senior Accounting Assistant II - County Clerk - Treasury (Corpus Christi, TxP in Corpus Christi, Texas

Base Pay: $18.23 Hourly

SUMMARY:

Oversees the performance of routine and moderately complex bookkeeping and accounting tasks, including assigning work to and reviewing work of subordinate employees, merging their work, resolving discrepancies and preparing reports.

The employee is required to be on duty before, during, and after natural disasters and emergencies, as directed by the supervisor.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Reviews work of clerical personnel and answers their questions regarding budgets, purchase orders, etc.

Compiles work from other offices, and checks for and resolves errors and completes forms and reports.

Serves as a resource to other employees for non-routine questions or problems.

Posts receipts and/or disbursement to appropriate ledger(s), journal(s) and or report(s) and insures that accounts balance.

Prepares reports at regular intervals reflecting disbursements and/or receipts by category and/or project.

Processes and disburses checks for refunds, proper distribution of receipts or other appropriate purpose.

Gathers financial and statistical data and prepares reports of program activities.

Responds to inquiries about the department or division, especially related to financial transactions, from persons visiting the office, calling on the telephone or writing to request information.

Prepares the annual fiscal budget for departments under County Clerk.

Prepares agenda items for commissioner's court.

Prepares and accounts for purchase orders for purchases.

Contacts vendors on price quotes and obtains required forms.

Enters financial and other data on computer terminal and balances source data to computer printouts.

Undertakes special accounting projects and prepares special reports as assigned.

Creates and maintains necessary manual and computerized files and filing systems.

Creates and types correspondence and reports.

Verifies receipts and/or cash register tapes to checks received, identifies errors and makes necessary corrections.

Answers telephone, responds to inquiries, refers caller to appropriate party or takes messages.

Processes transfers of funds among accounts and/or projects.

May train new employees.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Any employee who drives a vehicle on official business must have a driving record which meets standards set by the County and the Countys insurance carrier.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); including or supplemented by bookkeeping or accounting courses, plus three years of clerical and/or secretarial experience, one year of which involved bookkeeping or accounting.

Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities, may be considered for current Nueces County employees only.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles relating to single and double entry accounting systems and financial reports.

Ability to work quickly and accurately with numbers and to maintain neat, well-organized records.

Ability to operate a 10-key calculator by touch.

Ability to type at a speed of at least 45 words per minute.

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Ability to exercise independent judgment regarding release of confidential information.

Ability to operate a computer using standard word processing, data inquiry and spreadsheet programs.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working elationships with other county employees and officials and the general public.
