Northrop Grumman, Space Systems, is seeking a Principal Systems/Sr. Principal Systems Engineer to join our Systems Engineering team. This position will be at our Propulsion Systems Division facility located in Promontory, UT with periodic assignments at our Bacchus (Magna), UT location

Roles and Responsibilities:

Systems Engineers are responsible to work with the Chief Engineers and Program Leadership to support key program objectives through the development and management of architecture, requirements, verification planning and change integration for our solid rocket motor and booster motor systems. Systems Engineers actively participate in the development of new systems and system upgrades by managing architecture, requirements, verification, and integrated change control processes in a disciplined, broad reaching process, to ensure our propulsion systems projects perform to specification, satisfy customer needs, and maintain configuration integrity throughout the lifecycle of each product. Systems Engineering at Northrop Grumman Propulsion Systems are primarily model based and provide support to multiple defense and commercial contracts including the Sentinel and NASA Artemis missions.

Systems engineering provides a gateway to many other leadership opportunities within Northrop Grumman. Roles may include aspects of project engineering, proposal support, and liaison engineering which naturally build essential skills necessary for future leadership opportunities.

The primary responsibility of the systems engineer in this position is to provide leadership in model-based digital capture of architecture and requirements while retrieving compliance data from various sources into the systems engineering model for a defense program.

  • Coordinate with customers to understand intent and needs of the integrated system

  • Evaluate and manage customer requirements and flow down in specifications and determine implementation approach

  • Analyze the needs of the system and translate into verifiable performance and design requirements

  • Manage associated verification approach and work with engineering teams to develop analysis and test results to support stakeholder requirements

  • Integrate customer directed changes into the system and facilitate implementation of changes within a change management system

  • Coordinate and communicate between multiple cross-functional subsystem teams

  • Develop model architecture for model-based integration of requirements, design, analysis, and verification

  • Coach early career systems engineers to develop talent

Basic Qualifications:

This position can be filled at either a level 3 or level 4.

Basic Qualifications for a level 3:

  • BS degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Physics or Engineering Management is required & 5 years of experience or 3 years with a MS

Basic Qualifications for a level 4:

  • BS degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Physics or Engineering Management is required & 8 years of experience or 8 years with a MS

  • Consideration will be given to candidates with a BS or MS degree in other engineering disciplines with strong relevant experience

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience working in Systems Engineering or in Integration Design or a related field in propulsion, preferably in a government contractor environment

  • Demonstrated experience in many aspects of aerospace design (or similar) development processes including design, analysis, testing and integration

  • Exposure to and familiarity with MBSE approaches and tools (Cameo, Doors, etc.) and some exposure to

  • MBSE languages (SysML or UML) are required

  • Capable of defining and implementing systems engineering models for new programs

  • Ability to navigate and/or define methodologies and frameworks for MBSE applications on a variety of programs

  • Familiarity with Model Based Engineering and integration of descriptive and analytical models

  • General familiarity with structural, mechanical, thermal dynamics, fluid dynamics, electro-mechanical and propulsion technologies

  • Understanding of requirements and basic principles of verification strategies

  • Experience and familiarity with model-based systems engineering tools, specifically object oriented tools like NoMagic Cameo or similar

  • Experience with architecture diagrams (structural diagrams for physical, functional, and logical relationships), behavior diagrams (activity, use case, etc.), and other MBSE diagrams useful to understand product needs

  • Experience with interface management between system elements and teams

  • Experience with concept of operations (ConOps) and product related strategy maps

  • Experience with digital thread methodology

  • Experience with manufacturing and quality control databases and processes

  • Ability and skills to work multidisciplined engineering problems

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Excellent time management and organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Experience with managing architecture and requirements modeling in MBSE tools

  • Experience developing plans and detailed schedules to accomplish an engineering effort

  • Experience with product testing, preferably system level tests demonstrating interaction between subsystems or major elements

  • Participation in developing formal interfaces between parts of a system

  • Experience and understanding of the relationships between engineering designs and resulting manufactured products

  • Experience with digital thread methodology

  • Experience with risk management

  • Formal education in Systems Engineering principles; a graduate certificate in Systems Engineering is highly preferred

Additional Requirements:

  • Successful candidate must be able to pass a background check for the Federal Safe Explosives Act (SEA)

This position’s standard work schedule is a 9/80A. The 9/80 schedule allows employees who work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off.

This role may offer a competitive relocation assistance package.

Salary Range: $92,600 - $139,000

Salary Range 2: $114,900 - $172,300

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
