The University of Miami/UHealth Department of Sports Medicine is currently seeking a full time Outreach Athletic Trainer 2 to work in Coral Gables, FL. The Outreach Athletic Trainer 2 possesses the clinical evaluation skills and education expected of a Certified Athletic Trainer to effectively provide patient-centered care. The incumbent provides athletic training services as the assistant or head athletic trainer to patients in various settings and provides on-site event coverage as assigned. The incumbent has direct patient contact primarily for the evaluation and treatment of medical and musculoskeletal pathology in the clinical setting and/or on the field.
CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
Conducts comprehensive or episodic health history and physical assessment of patients with acute, chronic, or potential injuries and illnesses.
Takes a thorough history, including but not limited to: chief complaint, vitals, pain score, mechanism of injury, past medical history, and review of systems.
Performs an appropriate physical examination, including but not limited to: range of motion testing, strength/manual muscle testing, neurovascular and sensation testing, palpation, special and ligamentous testing, and functional testing.
Reviews Preparticipation Physical Evaluation Forms, per FHSAA or organizational guidelines, and updates the electronic record-keeping system with clearance or facilitates referral for clearance.
Performs and documents baseline testing per organization’s requirements such as concussion.
Provides patient education including answering questions and instructing on rehabilitation exercises.
Fits patients with splints, crutches, braces, wraps, and other orthopedic appliances/DMEs and educates on proper use. Performs wound care, gait training, and splinting application and removal.
Documents patient encounters and communicates with patients, other staff, and providers in electronic medical records.
Serves as a Preceptor, mentor, and/or supervisor for students observing, shadowing, and obtaining clinical experience in sports medicine.
Develops plans for providing athletic training services and carrying out event coverage. Develops comprehensive venue and event-specific emergency action plans.
Establishes a working relationship with contacts such as coaches, athletic directors, school nurses, and other staff as applicable. Maintains a functional and sanitary remote work location.
Provides guidance to sports administrators, coaches, athletes, parents, and organizational groups regarding healthcare-related topics.
Monitors supply inventory of remote work locations; working with appropriate contacts to maintain supply inventory and order supplies/equipment, as necessary.
Communicates medical support staff coverage needs and collaborates and executes marketing initiatives with the Outreach Coordinator/Supervisor.
Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Education:
Bachelor’s degree in relevant field
Certification and Licensing:
Certification in relevant specialty or field
Experience:
Minimum 2 years of relevant experience
Department Specific Functions
This athletic trainer will be assigned to an outreach site(s) according to departmental need such as local schools and sport clubs. This athletic trainer may also be assigned to various locations and providers within the Department of Orthopaedics to assist with the care of patients in the clinic setting.
Department Specific Qualifications
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in relevant field.
Certification and Licensing:
Must be BOC certified and possess state athletic training licensure, certification, or registration. NPI number required. American Heart Association BLS Certification also required.
