Research Engineer II – Microelectronics Assembly

Summary:

Research Engineer serves as principal investigator for multiple research projects investigating electronic assembly processes, assembly materials, interconnect reliability or novel assembly manufacturing equipment as they relate to existing or developmental electronic packaging technologies. Duties include planning and executing laboratory research activities; responsible for timely project execution, detailed written reports, technical presentations and customer communications. Position reports to manager of SMT process laboratory research consortium.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Develops research plans and associated experimental procedures in support of consortium research objectives.

  • Executes planned consortium research in a safe and scientifically rigorous manner.

  • Assists and directs university students in assigned research tasks and development projects.

  • Uses computer software and electronic instrumentation to conduct tests and analyze data in accordance with accepted industry practices.

  • Presents results and conclusions to professional audiences in a technical seminar format on a routine basis.

  • Writes detailed technical reports and scientific papers detailing procedures, outcomes, observations and analyses of research results.

  • Provides professional communication with customers, suppliers, and consortium company representatives in support of consortium research tasks and laboratory service jobs.

  • Directs and coordinates activities concerned with design, material selection and procurement, assembly process definition, and manufacturing equipment specification.

  • Provides consultation in areas of electronics manufacturing, materials and process to external and internal customers.

    Minimum Requirements:

  • B.S. degree combined with equivalent relevant research experience.

  • 2-4 years of experience evaluating electronic materials, solder metallurgy, assembly manufacturing processes or reliability failure mechanisms.

  • M.S. Degree in Mechanical, Chemical or Materials Engineering, or relevant field of Science or Engineering, or Ph.D. degree encouraged.

  • Experience with thermal interface material ( TIM ) property investigation, is a plus.

  • Basic knowledge of measurement principles, mechanical design, metallurgy, physics, etc.

  • Familiarity with microscopes, measuring devices and other necessary tools.

  • Willingness to travel to customer sites and technical conferences from time to time, is desirable.

  • Must be articulate in spoken and written communications, with strong interpersonal skills.

    Physical Demands:

  • Requires the ability to use a computer on a frequent basis.

  • Ability to travel to customer sites or technical conferences may occasionally be required.

    Target Annual Base Pay: $90,000 - $98,000 + Robust Benefits
