Research and Development Manager

Summary

Responsible for developing and managing the personnel, projects and membership in the Advanced Research in Electronics Assembly (AREA) Consortium. Conducts and supervises fundamental experimental and analytical research relating to process development for advanced concepts in electronics assembly. Primary research focus includes current and emerging technologies in the areas of surface mount electronics assembly, semiconductor packaging and assembly materials. Coordinates and directs research in conjunction with outside collaborators, university faculty and graduate students. Position reports to Director of the Advanced Process Lab (APL).

Principal Accountabilities (Functional)

  • Identifies business and research opportunities for the growth of the AREA consortium.

  • Develops and documents the AREA Consortium Research plan for each year.

  • Interacts with companies involved in the production of electronic products and materials.

  • Utilizes formal engineering education and job related experience to solve daily problems arising from customer requests for process help in electronics assembly.

  • Manages budgeting of project resources and time, and presentation of results.

  • Promotes the enhancement of the APL reputation through competent research, technical reports and documentation, consortium activities, publishing of world class papers, and representing the APL at customer sites, in-house meetings, and various conferences.

  • 30% travel to visit prospective and existing consortium members in support of AREA membership growth.

  • Prepares and organizes AREA events, hosting 50-60 customers at research review meetings.

  • Provides APL website content such as news updates and meeting content consortium research, etc. to membership via website and other media.

  • Supports other functional groups in the APL such as Process and Analytical Services.

  • Prepares and releases an AREA Consortium Newsletters for external and internal distribution.

  • Manages University student research contracts and supervises graduate research students, university faculty and outside consultants in support of AREA Consortium research.

    Principal Accountabilities (General Supervisory)

  • Performs supervisory functions for AREA staff including performance appraisal input, establishing and implementing team/individual Critical Success Factors, including the measurement and documentation of the progress of each employee toward the established goals.

  • Implements cross-training activities and plans for employees under his/her direction with specific attention toward the development of a highly flexible work force.

  • Analyzes and resolves work problems or assists employees in solving work-related problems.

  • Performs other job-related duties as required.

    Minimum Requirements

  • M.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or Materials Engineering

  • 8-10 years of relevant experience OR Ph.D. with 5-7 experience in a related field.

  • 1-3 years of supervisor experience required.

  • Knowledgeable in mechanics, metallurgy, FEA, vibration, data analysis and experimental techniques.

    Responsibility for Quality Procedures, Ethical Practices and Data Integrity

  • Adheres to Universal Instruments Quality System policies and procedures.

  • Practices and promotes safe laboratory procedures and operations.

  • Ethical practices for data collection, analysis and reporting and assures scientific integrity of reported results

    Physical Demands

  • The ability to travel 30% to customer sites or technical conferences.

  • Must be a proficient technical speaker, writer and presenter.

    Target Base Annual Pay: $138,000 - $150,000 + Robust Benefits
