Our location in Columbus, OH, currently has an opportunity for a Section Manager – Food & Physical Chemistry

Responsible for leading a team of analytical chemists in Food and Physical Chemistry for the breadth of Abbott Nutrition products. The team supports routine testing for new product development, test method development and validation, method transfers, support for Abbott Nutrition manufacturing sites and third-party laboratory partners, and external engagement. The team also consults with Product Development, Quality, Engineering, and Regulatory functions on testing needs and data interpretation.

Scope/Accountability:

The Section Manager – Food & Physical Chemistry leads a team of 10-15 chemists within the Global Analytical and Food Safety department of R&D. The team provides test method development, validation, and method maintenance for physical stability and food chemistry methods globally. The team works cross-functionally and in partnership with regional R&D labs, Quality Assurance, and manufacturing labs. The team also participates in external engagement activities to drive adoption of fit-for-purpose methodology across the globe.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Support the culture of safety, quality, and best-in-class test methodology.

  • Manage and develop the team of managers / supervisors, direct reports, and contingent employees.

  • Drive continuous improvements in both knowledge and technical capabilities.

  • Establish strong relationships with regional R&D centers and other cross-functional partners.

  • Mentor global and regional talent.

  • Enable capability development through sharing and standardization of processes and standards.

  • Drive accountability

  • Primary contact for testing needs and issues within Food Chemistry and Physical Stability for key stakeholders in Commercial, Research & Development, Quality, and Supply Chain.

  • Timely delivery of routine testing commitments, new method development & validation projects, investigations, and other special projects.

  • Ensure the lab in Columbus, Ohio is working in compliance with AN Quality and Safety requirements.

  • Set lab strategy

  • Align laboratory assets and test methods with business priorities, gaining alignment with division and corporate stakeholders, and executing to assure measurable outcomes are met.

  • Maintain global strategy for area, including new technology investment and obsolescence.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE, YOU’LL BRING

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science, preferably in chemistry or food chemistry; Master’s or PhD degree in chemistry or food chemistry preferred.

  • 10+ years of experience in laboratory analysis

  • Experience developing and validating analytical methods.

  • Strong understanding of GLP, ISO 17025, and other laboratory quality requirements.

  • Strong program management, organizational, planning, and follow up skills; ability to hold others accountable.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization and manage internal and external stakeholders.

  • Ability to set strategy and vision and align external roadmaps w/ organization’s business priorities.

  • Multitasks, prioritizes and meets deadlines in timely manner.

  • Ability to travel approximately 10%, including internationally.

Preferred

  • Background in analytical chemistry, food chemistry, and/or protein chemistry.

  • Practical experience in statistics and associated software.

  • Experience with food and beverage manufacture.

  • Experience leading a laboratory team.

  • Familiarity with AOAC International and/or ISO.

  • Experience creating and delivering executive presentations.

  • Ability to negotiate and influence outcomes with cross-functional partners.

The base pay for this position is $125,300.00 – $250,700.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
