Intermountain Health Pharmacy Technician in Columbus, Ohio
Job Description:
This incumbent demonstrates consistent application of knowledge and skills in assisting the pharmacist in the execution of appropriate, safe, efficacious, efficient, and cost-effective pharmaceutical care. The incumbent participates in many procedural aspects of pharmacy practice under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist or technician supervisor and is an integral part of the pharmacy team.
This is a Full-Time, 40 hour a week position. Pharmacy hours of operation are 7:30am to 6pm Monday through Friday and closed Weekends and Holidays.
Located at our Saint Joseph Hospital.
As a Specialty Pharmacy Tech you need to know how to: Assist with all phases of pharmacy services. Work with patients, providers, and insurance companies to obtain prior authorizations. Answer phones and notes from physicians in a timely manner. Accurately read, interpret and enter prescriptions in a timely manner. Route questionable prescriptions to the pharmacist for completion. Make outbound calls / faxing the physicians for prescription clarification, substitutions and formulary changes as needed.
Prepare medication orders according to established policies, procedures, and protocols.
Assist pharmacist by gathering clinical information on patients. Assist the Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in providing specialty pharmacy services to the patients of the assigned SCL Health clinic, including: finding funding assistance for patient copays, assisting patients with completing required registration forms for pharmaceutical programs, reimbursement applications, and other forms as needed for their pharmaceutical care, and representing the pharmacy to the providers and provider clinic staff when the Clinical Pharmacy Specialist is unavailable.
Package and label medications accurately and appropriately to minimize waste. Verify and monitor controlled substance inventories as required by daily shift assignment.
Complete charges from previous days orders and assure that wastage is charged appropriately and eliminated.
Participate in quality and patient safety initiatives. Identify potential areas for improvement including processes that could be streamlined or revised to improve patient satisfaction. Identify potential safety hazards that may create problems for patients and/or staff, and take appropriate actions. Participate in departmental meetings, contributing ideas or feedback.
Complete documentation according to departmental standards. Maintain cleanliness of all pharmacy working areas, including Hazardous Waste Removal as necessary.
Manage Specialty Pharmacy Medication and Supply Inventory. Procure all formulary medications, medical and office supplies. Supervise quarterly pharmacy physical inventory. Reconcile and maintain all invoices. Return damaged, overstocked, or expired merchandise to manufacturers and wholesalers in a timely manner. Resolve shipping problems/errors and expedite backorders.
Evaluate and authorize approval of prior authorization pharmacy requests from prescribers received by telephone and/or facsimile using client clinical criteria. Determine appropriateness for medications. Communicate decision to physicians, physician's office staff, medical management staff and/or pharmacists. Research, resolve and document prior authorization outcomes in pharmacy system. Communicate selected prior authorization criteria, pharmacy benefit coverage and formulary alternatives to physicians, physician's office staff, medical management staff and/or pharmacists. Escalate requests to Pharmacist when request requires extensive clinical review or denial. Research, resolve and document physician or client inquiries and grievances and provide verbal or written results to client, prescriber, provider and/or management.
Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma or equivalent
Current Pharmacy Technician certification (CPhT)
Minimum of two (2) years of experience working as a Certified Pharmacy Technician in a hospital or retail pharmacy setting.
Preferred Qualifications:
Completion of technician training program.
At least one (1) year of specialty pharmacy experience.

The hourly range for this position is listed below. Actual hourly rate dependent upon experience.
