Girl Scouts of Southeastern Michigan Lead Camp Counselor (Summer Position) in Columbus, Michigan

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Lead Camp Counselor will assist in maintaining the safety and wellbeing of campers as related to all applicable governing guidelines. They will assist with integrating the principles of the Girl Scout program into camp activities and cabin life. Lead Camp Counselors will also run specialized activities such as swimming, challenge course, archery, and more. Lead Camp Counselors will assist cabin counselors with day-to-day responsibilities. Lead Camp Counselors must commit to lead by example and live by the Girl Scout Law.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • To incorporate opportunities for teaching courage, confidence, and character during daily interaction with campers and staff.
  • Facilitate a supportive cabin environment where campers learn to respect one another in recognition of the differences and similarities that each share.
  • Assist in teaching outdoor skills and techniques and to foster an appreciation for the natural environment.
  • Create an atmosphere of teamwork by leading girls through teambuilding programming on and off the challenge course.
  • Work within established Girl Scout methods of camper government which provides the opportunity for girl planning and decision making.
  • Review safety procedures and programming daily.
  • Assist in maintenance of equipment records and program area maintenance.
  • Facilitate daily camp programming activities as assigned.
  • Assist in opening and closing of camp.
  • Facilitate daily cabin housekeeping and cabin chores (Kapers).
  • The ability to assist campers with a variety of needs such as homesickness, conflict resolution, and behavior management.
  • Responsible for camper welfare for complying with the instructions from the Health Supervisor in relation to camper health needs.
  • Follow camp policies, standards, and procedures.
  • Carry out other non-essential duties as delegated by the assistant camp manager including assisting staff in other cabins, assisting in the office, assisting in the kitchen, and assisting with camp programs or events.
  • Supervise mealtimes.
  • Support other staff in day-to-day responsibilities and tasks when needed.
  • Respond to emergencies effectively and efficiently
  • Assist the camp directors with staff training and lead in service training sessions
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Must be at least 18 years of age.

Minimum 1 year experience working as an overnight camp counselor

Willing to live in a cabin with campers.

Flexible and committed to personal and professional development.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Good judgement in anticipating and preventing accidents.

Be able to act calmly, quickly, and give and/or follow directions during an emergency.

Knowledge of safety practices as applicable.

Must be ready and able to communicate well with girls and staff and be flexible about programming options.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Become a registered member of Girl Scouts of the USA.

Willingness to obtain CPR and First Aid certification.

*EQUIPMENT USED: *Program supplies, specialty activity supplies, cleaning supplies, walkie-talkies.

*PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES/DEMANDS: *Ability to walk, stand, and sit for long periods of time. (2-3 hours). Walk distances of 2-3 miles in a day. Respond quickly to potential emergencies. Ability to lift 20 pounds.

*WORK CONDITIONS: *Activities occur both indoor and outdoor environment.
