Technician II, Automotive

Full Range: $23.894 - $34.591 per hour

Hiring Range: $25.937 - $27.666 per hour

Technician III, Automotive

Full Range: $25.990 - $37.668 per hour

Hiring Range: $28.235 - $30.117 per hour

This position has an anticipated work schedule of Monday – Thursday, 6:30am – 5:00pm, subject to change. Under FLSA guidelines, this position is non-exempt.

Performs maintenance and repair services on light/medium duty vehicles, small equipment, and attachments. May perform minor welding; fabrication or modification of parts to improve safety and create efficient operation on minor and major parts for vehicles, equipment, and small mobile machinery. This position is part of the Technician, Automotive career progression series, which includes Technician II, Automotive, Technician III, Automotive, and Senior Technician, Automotive. An employee is eligible to advance to the next position within the series when the employee has met the criteria for advancement as notated within the job description and has received a recommendation from the Hiring Authority.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Performs preventive maintenance services in accordance with service checklist.

  • With limited supervision, performs minor repairs and maintenance to light duty vehicles, small equipment, and attachments in garage(s) and in the field.

  • May assist other technicians in performing more advanced/complex repairs.

  • Uses a variety of diagnostic equipment to accurately identify malfunctions.

  • Follows all guidelines set forth in the Fleet Management Standard Operating Procedure (FMSOP).

  • Uses laptop and existing database to input accurate and detailed descriptions of daily work activities. Responsible for the security and authorized use of laptops.

  • Ensures work area and other assigned shop areas are kept clean and organized to prevent accidents and injuries.

  • Scheduled for on-call after hours to respond to El Paso County emergencies.

  • Performs other duties as required.

Additional Technician III:

  • Performs repairs and maintenance to vehicles, landscape, and construction equipment, attachments, and auxiliary equipment in garage(s) and in the field.

  • Upon certification, performs DOT and emissions inspections.

  • Performs brake system and HVAC repairs.

  • Performs preventive maintenance services in accordance with service checklist.

  • Uses a variety of diagnostic equipment to accurately identify malfunctions.

  • Performs minor welding under close supervision.

  • Provides assistance and guidance to peers as needed.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must provide own basic mechanic tools to perform essential job functions.

  • Knowledge of and ability to perform automotive and small equipment preventative maintenance.

  • Must be knowledgeable in using personal and shop tools to prevent accidents/injuries.

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.

  • Ability to diagnose system equipment faults including electrical, hydraulic, steering, suspension systems using various diagnostic equipment and software programs.

  • Ability to understand technical and parts manuals, including electronic versions.

  • Ability to operate assigned equipment and tools effectively and safely.

  • Must observe and follow safety procedures and precautions.

  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.

  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with County staff, customers, and the public.

  • Ability to operate standard office equipment such as computers, printers, copiers, and telephone.

  • Ability to complete Individualized Development Plan (IDP).

  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance.

Technician III:

  • Knowledge of and ability to perform automotive and small mobile equipment preventative maintenance and repair.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Minimum two years of vehicle/equipment mechanical experience.

  • An equivalent combination of related education and experience may be substituted for the education and experience requirements above.

Technician III:

  • Minimum four years of vehicle/equipment maintenance and repair, one of which must have been in a professional setting.

  • An equivalent combination of related education and experience may be substituted for the education and experience requirements above.

Preferred Education and Experience:

Technician III:

  • Previous experience with landscape and construction equipment (i.e., mowers, tractors, backhoes, UTVs).

Licenses/Certificates:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.

  • ASE (Automotive) Certification preferred.

Technician III:

  • Must obtain a Colorado Class B Permit or higher within six months of employment and a Colorado Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or higher within one year of employment; CDL training is provided by El Paso County.

  • Must possess and maintain a Colorado State Diesel Emission Inspector Certification or obtain within six months of employment.

  • Must possess a Refrigerant Control Certification or the ability to obtain within six months of employment.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

  • Must pass conditional post offer background investigation, motor vehicle record check, drug screen, and physical examination.

Work Conditions

Duties are typically performed in a garage environment or in the field. May be exposed to hazardous materials, such as antifreeze, lubricants, solvents, corrosives, fuels, and vapors. Work may be performed in hazardous situations including close proximity to moving vehicles/equipment and traffic, recovering vehicles/equipment, and in adverse weather conditions. Work is performed with potentially dangerous equipment and tools. Must be able to safely lift and carry up to 75 lbs. Regular work schedule may include weekends. Responds to on-call after hours and El Paso County emergencies.

Additional Technician III: Subject to drug and alcohol testing.
