Mitchell County Hospital District OR Technician - LVN/RN in Colorado City, Texas

Position Summary:

Assists in nursing care activities and institutional services in the operating room under the direction of a RN and according to departmental policies.Performs scrub duties and specific institutional nursing services duties appropriate and authorized by the situation. RN Relieves OR Manager and Pre-op Nurse as needed

OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Class I.

Qualifications:

  • Education: High School graduate or equivalent or graduate of the Operating Room Technical program.
  • Personal Job Related Skills: Knowledge of surgical scrub duties preferred. The ability to comprehend and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Licensure, Registry or Certification: Certification as an Operating Room Technician preferred. Texas LVN license or RN license.CPR.
  • Experience:
  1. Prior Work Experience: Operating Room experience preferred.
  2. Technical Training: Operating Room Technician program desired.
  • Physical and Mental Requirements: Duties of the position require extended periods of standing and walking. Bending, stooping, twisting, reaching, pulling, and pushing when handling instruments. Lifting up to 50 pounds. Occasional heavy lifting when moving or supporting patients who may suddenly become weak or helpless.

Duties, Responsibilities, and Skills:

  • Assists in helping the surgeon accomplish a plan of care for the patient.
  • Performs delegated duties as a scrubbed member of the nursing team, including preparing the room, supplies, and equipment for the patient, assisting in preparing the preoperative site and draping the patient according to established procedure to provide and ample sterile field.
  • Carries out nursing activities required during operations pertaining to handling of instruments, sponges, sutures, catheters, drains, and dressings in such a manner as to ensure medical and surgical asepsis and safety to the patient.
  • Assists in cleanup of the room between cases and at the end of the schedule, including bagging of soiled linens, disposing of soiled gloves and debris, transporting soiled instruments and salvaged supplies to the workroom, and washing of buckets.
  • Assists in the operating of electrical equipment and sterilization and/or disinfection of equipment.
  • Provides care appropriate for the pediatric, adolescent, and geriatric patients served based on demonstrated knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span.
  • Assesses and interprets data on the pediatric, adolescent, and geriatric patients status to identify patient's requirements relative to their age-specific needs and provides care needed as stipulated in departmental policy.
  • Assists in lifting and transporting patients and transporting specimens.
  • Transports patients from the nursing unit to the operating room and from the operating room to the recovery room if instructed to do so.
  • Assists in the preparation of specimens and transporting them to a designated area.
  • Assists in the preparation and aftercare of equipment and supplies.
  • Cleans soiled instruments, using ultrasonic cleaner when needed, checks for defective items, assembles clean instruments in perfect condition trays, and stores special items in designed areas.
  • Selects and transports required operative setup to rooms for specific case.
  • Tests operational efficiency of equipment prior to and after each case and reports problems to the nurse in charge.
  • Sterilizes and disinfects instruments prior to procedure if necessary.
  • Assists in restocking of rooms according to established standards.
  • Assists in taking inventories of equipment and supplies.
  • Assists surgeons in the application of casts in the treatment of fractures and in holding retractors and cutting sutures.
  • Assists surgeon during procedures.

Other Significant Requirements:

RN Relieves OR Manager and Pre-op Nurse and performs her duties as needed in their absence.

Maintain HIPAA required and all other confidentiality while working with confidential matters on a daily basis.

Follow all policies and procedures set forth by Mitchell County Hospital District.

  • Provides service direct to patients while maintaining a positive patient relations atmosphere.
  • Other duties, as assigned by supervisor.
  • Follows aseptic procedures and precautions when involved in direct patient contact or handling potentially infectious materials.
  • Interacts with Medical Staff members, family members, and staff members of other departments on a continuous basis.
  • Participates in in-service programs, in safety, infection control, staff meetings, committee meetings and assigned yearly education.
  • Follows safety guidelines and policies for the hospital.
