Mitchell County Hospital District Dental Hygienist - Correctional Care Unit in Colorado City, Texas

DEPARTMENT: Correctional Care Unit

JOB SUMMARY: Identifies patient's dental problems, provides service or treatment or refers to others as appropriate. Documents care given.

OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Class I.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:High School graduate or equivalent. Graduate from an accredited dental hygiene program. Personal Job-Related Skills:Ability to learn procedures involved in dental tests and procedures. Knowledge of clinical dental principles and terminology. Effective written and oral communication. Familiar with operating computers and Electronic Medical Records Systems. Licensure, Registry or Certification: Licensed by the State of Texas as a Dental Hygienist. Current CPR. Experience: Prior Work Experience:Previous dental hygiene experience preferred. Technical Training:None required. Physical and Mental Requirements:Duties of the position require moderate periods of sitting and standing, lifting up to 40 pounds.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provides dental care to patients.

  1. Identifies patient's dental care problems and needs.

``` 1. 1. Identifies physical findings. 2. Indicates knowledge relevant to the offender's dental problems. 3. Facilitates offender's participation in planning for care. 4. Makes appropriate documentation and correlates the dental process and SOAP format when applicable. 5. Recognizes the need for referral to other members of the health team or other departments. 6. Administers fluoride treatments after each prophylaxis with cautions given on not swallowing. 7. Teaches offenders to brush and floss properly. 8. Explains tests and treatments in terms necessary for the offenders understanding. 9. Reports changes in offender's condition to dentist. 10. Reports and documents effectiveness of treatments.

OTHER SIGNIFICANT REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Maintains HIPAA required and all other confidentiality while working with confidential matters on a daily basis.
  2. Provides service direct to patients while maintaining a positive patient relations atmosphere.
  3. Follows procedures for using precautions when involved in direct patient contact or when handling potentially infectious materials.
  4. Follows safety guidelines and policies for the Clinic.
