Job Purpose: The Laboratory Animal Technician is a professional animal care specialist who, in accordance with standard operating procedures and regulatory requirements performs a wide variety of duties necessary to ensure the care, welfare, enrichment and well being of all laboratory animals entrusted to their care.

Key Responsibilities: Responsible for daily laboratory animal husbandry and care including enrichment and well being practices for all animals assigned to their responsibility Perform the duties required for the daily care of various research animals including feeding, watering, cleaning, and cage sanitization as well as the moving and transferring of animals as needed Make daily observations related to the condition and health of animals and report any irregularities in the animal colony, including the recording and reporting of ill or abnormal animals and conditions to the supervisory and veterinary staff in a timely fashion Maintain animal rooms and facilities in a hospital-clean state of sanitation at all times Responsible for reviewing, learning and following all departmental protocols and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's) and safety practices (EHS). Demonstrate high accuracy with record keeping and documentation required including AREA forms and other required documentation practices Regularly use and update animal inventory data via the Tick@Lab system Operate equipment to move and handle materials required for the operation of the department, e.g., feed, bedding, caging, chemicals, and various other supplies and expendables. Perform authorized routine maintenance and repairs of assigned equipment and report all broken or malfunctioning equipment to the supervisor Receive animals on arrival in accordance with SOP established for each species and perform duties such as unloading, uncrating, transferring, weighing, inspecting and signing for designated animals Ensure compliance with all safety practices and appropriate use of all personal protective equipment at all times Make suggestions on how  to enhance and to continuously improve our animal welfare programs Support a "One Team" culture by exhibiting a high degree of team working skills with colleagues Maintain up to date knowledge of advancements in the field of laboratory animal care Perform after hours, weekend, and holiday work as required to meet the operational needs of the department Communicate appropriately with scientific staff and veterinary staff as needed

Basic Qualifications: High School Diploma or equivalent 2 years relevant animal related experience AALAS certification required to appropriate levels as per job role
