Description
The Public Safety GIS Intern is a qualified undergraduate or graduate student ( majoring in Geography, Urban Planning, or other similar degree ) with an interest in learning about the development of Public Safety GIS data. Key tasks include creating and maintaining credible spatial data; performing data quality control & assurance; creating useful maps and web maps; and problem-solving & innovation with a focus on end-user needs. The end goals of the internship are to provide the intern with a meaningful experience in the field of GIS and to learn how GIS relates to Public Safety. The position reports to the Department’s GIS Analyst.
Principal Duties
Work with City staff on GIS projects.
Creation and maintenance of GIS data.
Fulfill internal and external requests for GIS documents such as maps & infographics.
Locate and digitize geometry & attributes of new and existing infrastructure, using aerial/satellite imagery.
Perform other tasks as may be assigned to support the GIS public safety operations of College Station, TX .
Qualifications
Must be receiving academic credit from an accredited college or university.
High School diploma or GED equivalent.
Valid Driver’s License.
Reliable transportation to and from the Police Department .
Intermediate level of computer knowledge and experience.
Intermediate level of GIS and ESRI product suite knowledge.
Ability to utilize word processing and data entry programs.
Ability to work with a high degree of accuracy and strong attention to detail.
Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
Positive and supportive attitude with people of all backgrounds and abilities.
Motivated, self-starter who takes the initiative to seek out tasks from staff.
Commitment to comply with confidentiality requirements and police policies.
Supportive of the mission of the College Station Police Department - To protect and serve with excellence.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Excellent organizational skills.
Ability to make judgments based upon knowledge of department policies and procedures.
Supplemental Information
DATES:Summer Semesters (May 2025 - July 2025)
HOURS:Flexible (generally 8 to 5, M – F) / Not to exceed 20 hours per week (1 Position)
