Abbott Business Operational Excellence Manager in Clonmel, Ireland

Purpose Statement

  • To provide the onsite thought leadership for Business Excellence to drive and maintain high OpEx standards, our Continuous Improvement activities, 6-Sigma competency and culture.

  • Supporting our initiatives to improve the output of the site through productivity in the direct (DL) and the indirect (IL) teams.

Key Responsibilities

1. To provide the key leadership role for the Business Excellence (BEx) team on site.

  • To take ownership of the key BEx metrics and to provide oversight and management to maintain and improve. To drive the action responses and ensure ownership within the organization (at Supervisor, Manager, and Director levels).

  • To identify and drive Continuous Improvement (CI), year-on-year, for the key business processes, operational framework, and elements within the site (e.g. Abbott Vascular Operating System (AVOS), 5S, Gemba Walks, Visual management support, etc.)

  • To seek out new ‘external’ approaches to OpEx tools, techniques, and frameworks by benchmarking inside and outside of Abbott.

  • To provide oversight to the execution of the BEx week activities – Tier 5 behaviours, BEx day projects, and Tier 6 management.

  • To conduct the DL and IL AVOS Health assessments to drive and maintain a greater than 80% average performance.

2. To provide Lean & Capacity Management support onsite

  • To support and define UPPH projects, PFM Updates, and Station Relayouts (on request).

  • To generate a Quarterly IL Productivity report

  • To develop and design a Site Capacity Model, including Standard Work, to allow ownership within the operations to support the ongoing Supply Plans, LBE, and annual financial planning.

3. Drive and provide leadership for the 6-sigma program on the site.

  • To drive the implementation of DMAIC 1 to DMAIC 4 training in support of the site Continuous Improvement Projects (CIP) and the Six Sigma Program.

  • To coordinate the Certification for DMAIC4 (Green Belt program).

4. Drive the Continuous Improvement Culture & Develop the skills for growth opportunities

  • Drive use and maintenance of the DMAIC framework

  • Ensure that knowledge gained through the Six Sigma programme is shared cross-functionally and cross-site.

  • To provide leadership and facilitation to key Kaizen events to drive more significant improvements on site.

  • Coordinate the sessions for Structure Problem solving & JMP Training - through Fabio Alvarado (Principle Statistician) and other training resources.

  • To provide JMP Licence management.

5. To coordinate the development of the annual Site Strategy to support the ‘5 for Success’ and the outline of the Transformational programs to support our strategic imperatives.

6. To coordinate the creation of the annual Site Objectives – to include revisions based on gravity-fed metrics and those agreed within the Director team.

7. To provide coordination and facilitation for key on-site meetings e.g. X-site benchmarking from other sites, Key leadership visits such as Senior DVPs, etc.

  • To develop an agreed agenda with the visiting parties and drive readiness for presentations and tours as required.

  • To support logistics and planning for any travel in partnership with the Site Communications lead.

Education & Job Skills


National Framework of Qualifications Skills (NFQ) level 8 qualification in a relevant discipline and 6+ years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Technical/Business Knowledge (Job Skills)
