Description of Work

This position performs field and office engineering for the maintenance operations that are overseen through the District 1 Office in Division 12, which covers Cleveland, and Gaston Counties. Position will provide technical, supervisory, management, and functional support to District Engineer and Assistant District Engineer in administering programs of a two-county district involved in the maintenance of roads, minor improvement projects, and resurfacing projects. Duties include contract administration encroachment review, driveway permit review, inspection, surveying, design, outdoor advertising, and various other duties as assigned. Employee in this position may be required to serve as a project inspector. These duties will include conducting independent moderate to complex inspection or survey party work for roadway and structure construction process and material.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Knowledge of understanding contracts, plans, standards, and specifications.

  • Experience in performing inspection, sampling, and testing of materials (concrete, asphalt density) to ensure compliance with NCDOT specifications.

  • Experience in maintaining neat, legible, and accurate records and reports, including computer/iPad data entry.

  • Working knowledge of computer equipment, (I-pads, desktop), software (MicroStation and ArcGis) and mathematical functions.

  • Experience in conducting independent, moderately complex inspections, with limited supervision.

Additional Expectations:

General knowledge of surveying and methods, equipment and materials used in highway construction; general knowledge of mathematical functions, including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. Ability to read and interpret construction plans, contract provisions, specifications and inspection procedures, ability to take good notes and good communication skills. Must be able to work traverse rough and steep terrain. Work includes nights and weekends. Safety Toe Shoes are needed for this position. *Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation. *

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and two (2) years of progressive technician level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
