We’re currently looking for a high caliber professional to join our team as Vice President, Legal Counsel, Japan - Hybrid based in Tokyo, Japan.
In this role, you’re expected to:
The Legal Counsel is a professional position responsible for accomplishing results in an effort to undertake day-to-day legal activities in the Legal team. The overall objective of this role is to provide legal support, advice and guidance across a broad range of practice areas.
Manage day to day activities of Legal team(s) within a country, product or sub-unit
Provide legal advisory services to business and defend legal matters
Supervise external counsel and resolve moderately complex issues
Continuously stay informed of regulatory changes, new regulations, internal policy changes and developments in relevant domestic or foreign laws
Allocate and coordinate resources and conduct planning activities, as needed
Appropriately assess risk when business decisions are made, demonstrating particular consideration for the firm's reputation and safeguarding Citigroup, its clients and assets, by driving compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations, adhering to Policy, applying sound ethical judgment regarding personal behavior, conduct and business practices, and escalating, managing and reporting control issues with transparency, as well as effectively supervise the activity of others and create accountability with those who fail to maintain these standards.

As a successful candidate, you’d ideally have the following skills and exposure:
6-10 years of relevant experience
Valid Bar license in Japan to practice law
Banking/financial industry experience or experience from big law firm
Extensive knowledge and understanding of area of responsibility
Consistently demonstrate clear and concise written and verbal communication
Strong communication skills to interact with internal and external stakeholders
Proven analytical and organizational skills
Strength to tackle with challenges and speak up when reputation of or safeguard to Citi could be compromised, attitude to proactively take charge of things, and teamwork spirit
Native level in Japanese, Fluency in legal English (Written, speaking, drafting) is essential.
Bachelor's degree/University degree
Master's degree preferred.
