About the Department

The Center for Health and the Social Sciences (CHeSS) provides the infrastructure to advance interdisciplinary research and training in health and social sciences at the University of Chicago. Housed under the Dean of the Biological Sciences Division\'s office, the Center attracts participation from across the University, including the Biological Sciences Division and Institute for Translational Medicine (ITM), Social Sciences Division, Physical Sciences Division, Booth School of Business, Harris School of Public Policy, Law School, Crown School of Social Work, Policy and Practice, National Opinion Research Center (NORC), and Argonne National Labs. The Center supports and promotes innovation and collaboration as well as excellence in research, scholarship and training. With 140 faculty associates from virtually all schools and divisions of the university, CHeSS serves as an incubator of ideas and supporter of research in health and the social sciences, sponsors seminars and workshops on campus, invites nationally-known scholars and policymakers to speak on a variety of topics, supports the writing and submission of grant applications and fundraising proposals, coordinates new research initiatives and projects, manages several training programs and provides expert research methods consultation during formative and operational phases of investigations.

Job Summary

The Center for Health and the Social Sciences (CHeSS) is seeking a Senior Research Analyst to join the Center Methods Core team. Advanced skills in programming and in the application of complex statistical methods are required. This will include programming of computationally intensive statistical procedures, variable creation, database management, data integration and analysis of large datasets using relevant statistical and data management software. The selected candidate will also conduct research related to healthcare economics, healthcare delivery science, health services research, biomedicine, clinical research and systems and processes redesign. The Senior Research Analyst will be responsible for the procurement, maintenance and quality of the CHeSS Methods Core\'s data holdings, specifically the Merative MarketScan Research Databases. Candidates must be able to work with multiple leaders and investigators across all aspects of project development and execution in order to produce meaningful analyses and results. We seek candidates who are adept in providing support and guidance to team members of varying technical proficiency and supporting users in the practical application of data and findings to advance health and clinical research.

Responsibilities

Conduct analysis and evaluation of internally and externally funded health research projects including observational studies and randomized control trials. Work with claims, administrative and electronic health record data to assess health outcomes and cost reduction of different patient populations. Sources include Medicare and Medicaid claims, the Merative MarketScan Research Databases, institutional and inter institutional electronic health records, National Death Index (NDI), NIH National COVID Cohort Collaborative (NC3) and Epic Systems, among others.

Design and develop statistical models and analyses using relevant software such as SAS, Stata, R, Python and SQL.

Advise research collaborators on statistics or biostatistics and the appropriate selection and application of analytic methods and algorithms. This includes advising collaborators in the selection of appropriate research methods and sample size calculation.

Prepare statistics and measures for teams and produce r ports and presentations as needed for funders and diverse audiences. Create meaningful data visualizations including charts, infographics, and other visual data elements to effectively highlight findings.

Manipulate, build large datasets and navigate relational databases. Integrate data sets to improve scope of research and quality of data.

Identify and procure relevant data from internal and external sources, including practice sites, university systems and departments, as well as local, regional, national, and global population data that can be used to improve practice, teaching, and discovery.

Collaborate with staff and faculty to assess data needs and implement user-driven solutions.

Assist faculty members to develop and write methods sections of project reports, grant applications and papers.

Communicate findings and share knowledge of advanced study design, methodologies, best practices and programming with other investigators and data users as appropriate.

Support data and analytics training initiatives within CHeSS and the University, including preparing and teaching in-person and remote applied sessions and tutorials to support course instructors.
