Amazon Senior Mechanical Engineer, Worldwide Grocery in Chicago, Illinois

Description

We are looking for an innovative Mechanical Engineer to join the Store Development Team who is obsessed with creating world-class shopping experiences for our customers. The ideal candidate will have a strong knowledge of code requirements and their application in a retail environment. This position will be responsible for the creation and implementation of technical standards along with managing the building systems engineering of developing prototypes and individual, on-going construction projects for the mechanical discipline.

This position will be part of an exciting, fast-moving business unit, where everyone on the team needs to be entrepreneurial, wear many hats and work effectively in a highly collaborative environment. You will work closely with architecture and engineering consultants as well as an in-house store design, construction and procurement teams. You are the right person for this job if you have a strong end user focus and a passion for producing high-quality work. You must take ownership of your work, display a great deal of initiative, possess common sense, sound judgment, and a sense of humor.

Key job responsibilities

Define, document, communicate and own mechanical and plumbing engineering design standards.

Maintain basis of design (BOD) for mechanical and plumbing disciplines.

Own prototype equipment specifications and approval for non-prototype equipment.

Develop and execute technical goals related to mechanical and plumbing cost reduction, continuous improvement, and sustainability.

Develop, cultivate, and manage relationships with third-party engineering consultants. Track and manage quality and cost of consultant work product.

Work cross functionally with other Amazon physical retail business groups to share and develop best practices and lessons learned.

Maintain commissioning standards and relationship with MEP/R system commissioning vendors.

Manage projects and effectively influence and communicate with internal and external business partners, contractors and vendors.

Review CDs and bulletins for scope, accuracy, completeness, and cost targets for new stores and renovations.

Conduct periodic site inspections and facility audits to review quality and operation of installed systems.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Architectural Engineering

  • 7+ years of experience in the field of engineering in commercial/retail buildings

  • Knowledge of Building, Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing and Refrigeration Codes

  • Ability to manage high level meetings and discussions with technical and non-technical participants

  • Strong project management experience

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Ability to meet tight deadlines and prioritize workloads

  • Strong organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Grocery/Supermarket design experience

  • 10+ years’ experience in the field of engineering in commercial buildings

  • PE licensure

  • Revit design experience

  • Knowledge of current sustainability trends and practices

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $107,600/year in our lowest geographic market up to $177,900/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
