SENIOR AIR MASK TECHNICIAN

Chicago Fire Department (CFD)

Number of Positions: 1

These positions are open to the general public and to all current city employees covered under the terms of the City's collective bargaining agreement with the INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF MACHINISTS AND AEROSPACE WORKERS, LOCAL NO. 126, (BARGAINING UNIT #36).

Under supervision, performs full range of duties in the repair, cleaning and maintenance of breathing and life support equipment including Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus (SCUBA), Oxygen Regulators, Oxygen Cylinders and related components used by firefighting and emergency medical services personnel; and performs related duties as required

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Assists in the inspection and dismantling of various equipment parts (e.g., facepieces, air and oxygen cylinders, compressed gas cylinders, breathing air regulators) to identify physical damage or signs of deterioration

  • Operates testing equipment and takes readings of pressure control systems to test cylinder valves for leakage, flow, and pressure levels

  • Assists in the repair, maintenance and replacement of malfunctioning equipment and parts and rebuilds cylinder valves, using small hand tools and specialized tools to ensure the safe operating condition of equipment

  • Conducts quality control tests, inspection, and calibration on equipment to ensure breathing equipment, valves and cylinders conform to operating standards and are in proper working order

  • Cleans breathing equipment and related parts as part of scheduled maintenance and equipment servicing

  • Conducts fit testing of facepieces on firefighters, medics, and other personnel

  • Works with senior staff in operating oxygen and compressed air fill stations to refill air and oxygen cylinders

  • Tracks and maintains an inventory of breathing equipment and related parts

  • Creates and processes work orders through the department system

  • Acts as a liaison with vendors to facilitate orders, repair and maintenance

  • Evaluates data and makes recommendations to management relative to improvement in service and efficiency

  • Assists in delivering equipment and supplies to and from fire houses

  • Maintains records, as required

Days: Monday - Friday

Hours: 7am – 3:30pm

The Chicago Fire Department may request that successful candidates pass a drug screen and background investigation. Persons offered employment must pass all pre-employment exams prior to appointment.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALFICATIONS

Education, Training, and Experience

  • One year of experience in maintaining and repairing appliances or mechanical equipment

Licensure, Certification, or Other Qualifications

  • MSA CARE (Certified Air mask Repair Education) Initial Certification is required

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS

This position requires applicants to complete an interview. The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position will be selected.

Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
