Duties and Responsibilities

Job Summary:

Under general direction, responsible to perform skilled maintenance, repairs and operation of equipment and systems in support of University central heating and cooling operations and environmental controls.

Duties & Responsibilities:

The Operating Engineer will be under the direct supervision of the Chief and Assistant Chief Engineers. Duties include, but not limited to operating or assisting in the operation of:

  • all HVAC equipment

  • motors, turbines, combustion engines, and pumps

  • air compressors

  • ice/refrigeration equipment

  • chillers (centrifugal, screw & reciprocating)

  • hot water boilers

  • low pressure steam boiler

  • elevators

  • fire suppression systems

  • ADA equipment

  • building automation systems ( BAS )

  • may at times be needed to assist with snow removal

  • other duties as assigned

    Minimum Education and/or Work Experience

  • High School Diploma, Trade School or GED graduate and three years of related experience; member of Local 399 Operating Engineers Union or enrollment in said union within 90 days of accepting position as operating engineer.

  • Licenses: City of Chicago Stationary Engineer License.

    Qualifications

High School Diploma, Trade School or GED graduate and three years of related experience; member of Local 399 International Union of Operating Engineers or enrollment in Local 399 within 90 days of accepting position as operating engineer.

Certificates/Credentials/Licenses

City of Chicago Stationary Engineer License

Must be in good standing with IUOE Local 399

Must have a valid driver’s license in good standing, and maintain the license while employed as an operating engineer

Computer Skills

  • proficient in the operation of building automation systems (Delta Controls and Precision Controls System)

  • advanced user of Microsoft office software

  • advanced user of computerized maintenance management software ( ARCHIBUS )
