Managing Associate General Counsel - Government Business

Location: This position will work in a hybrid model (virtual and office). The ideal candidate will live within 50 miles of one of our Elevance Health PulsePoint locations.

Elevance Health supports a hybrid workplace model with PulsePoint sites used for collaboration, community, and connection, with the minimum in-office commitment being 1-2 days in the office per week.

The Managing Associate General Counsel is responsible for directing the legal functions of assigned areas and managing a team of attorneys and/or paralegals who provide legal support for clients. Additionally, is responsible for providing legal advice and recommendations for actions. Develops and executes initiatives and projects in response to clients’ overall objectives and needs. Focus of work is on large scale and/or high financial level projects with broad department and/or organizational impact and moderate level of risk. Works as a strategic partner and decision maker with more senior leaders.

Primary duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Accomplishes results through assigned legal staff.

  • Develops assigned staff to ensure their individual effectiveness.

  • Provides guidance and leadership on more complex legal issues in which the analysis of situations and/or facts require an in-depth evaluation of various factors.

  • Provides concise and timely briefings to senior level business and upper-level legal management. Manages the staff’s workload.

  • Applies knowledge of one or more legal specialties with sound business acumen and knowledge of the business goals and objectives as they relate to the legal matter at hand.

  • Determines overall methods and procedures on new assignments and may coordinate legal projects.

  • Demonstrates the ability to effectively assess and mitigate risk on all legal initiatives and projects of assigned staff.

  • Serves as a resource for other attorneys and paralegals as well as business clients instructing and advising on technical and tactical issues.

  • Sets objectives for assigned legal team that align with the clients and the company’s business strategy.

  • Provides strategic counsel and advice concerning compliance with federal, state and local laws and regulations affecting Medicare Advantage, Medicaid managed care, D-SNP, and other government business (GB) plans, including preventative legal services and legal representation in monitoring and resolving disputes that may lead to litigation.

  • Assist Vice President - GB Legal in managing outside counsel for non-litigation matters and outside counsel budgets.

  • Maintains an appropriate framework for internal control to evaluate and protect the GBD’s legal interests and reduce its legal risks.

  • Serves as attorney to GB senior leaders in legal matters and communicates legal issues.

  • Attends and conducts a variety of meetings as assigned; establish and maintain relations/membership with local, State and Federal agencies and associations to remain current on programs and issues that affect legal service.

  • Hires, trains, coaches, counsels and evaluates the performance of direct reports.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Requires a JD, current license to practice law and minimum of 9 years specific industry and/or technical legal experience post licensure including experience in managing a staff, department budget and outside counsel; or any combination of education and experience, which would provide an equivalent background.

Preferred Skills, Capabilities and Experiences:

  • Substantial experience (9+ years) as a practicing attorney in a complex environment such as a large law firm, large business corporation or government agency.

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience with the healthcare industry, preferably direct experience with Medicaid and/or Medicare.

  • Significant experience managing the work of attorneys and other professionals and representing large complex and highly decentralized organizational clients with multiple stakeholder groups.

  • The ideal candidate will have:

  • Exceptional analytical, interpersonal, and written and oral communication skills, as well as sound judgment and personal and professional integrity.

For candidates working in person or remotely in the below locations, the salary* range for this specific position is $147,300 to $353,520.
