Rush University Medical Center Genetic Counselor - Pediatrics - Full-time in Chicago, Illinois

Work Schedule: 8 Hr (8:30:00 AM - 5:00:00 PM)

Summary:

The genetic counselor assists physician geneticists, oncology medicine physicians, and genetic counselors in patient care at Rush University Medical Center, Rush Medical College, and satellite clinics. The genetic counselor may also have their own clinic where they provide comprehensive counseling and potential genetic testing for appropriate patients. The genetic counselor works closely with oncologists, nurses, and support staff in oncology medicine. The genetic counselor will also be responsible for assisting in efforts related to genetic program growth across multidisciplinary teams in the Cancer Center and across Rush. General duties include counseling, record keeping, appropriate patient follow up, grant management, literature search, research, and teaching. Exemplifies the Rush mission, vision, and values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures.

Required Job Qualifications:

• Master's degree in Genetic Counseling from an American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) accredited program.

• Obtained full licensure for genetic counselor.

• Critical thinking abilities, the ability to function independently and demonstrate strong motivational, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Job Qualifications:

• Research experience.

Responsibilities:

• Provides comprehensive oncological counseling services to patients with a variety of indications including but not limited to: personal history of genetic diseases, strong personal history of cancer, and strong family history of cancer.

• Provides cancer genetic counseling including managing patient flow through clinic, eliciting/addressing patient concerns, providing cancer and genetic risk assessment and counseling about cancer risk reduction.

• Conducts appropriate follow-up including generation and distribution of consultant letters, documentation in patient record, and direct communication with collaborating healthcare providers.

• Assists in growing genetics program across multidisciplinary teams across the Cancer Center and Rush.

• Assists with the education of office staff on genetic and testing issues.

• Coordinates specimen delivery with appropriate laboratories.

• Assists with implementation, coordination, maintenance and design of ongoing and new research protocols.

• Other duties as requested or assigned by Supervisor.
