Summary:

Associate Vice President has responsibility and accountability for establishing and maintaining excellence in nursing practice and effectiveness and efficiency of nursing operations within their defined areas of responsibility. This position serves as facilitator of collaborative professional relationships between and among medical staff, academic programs, corporate programs, and hospital operations for the purpose of creating a healing and supportive environment for patients and staff. The position models the Rush Medical Center and Rush Nursing values of I Care, I Connect and, acts in accordance with Rush Medical Center and Rush Nursing policies and procedures and holds others accountable for meeting standards which may be informed by industry best practices or may be regulatory in nature.

Other information:

Current State of Illinois Registered Nurse licensure required.

· Master’s degree required; earned doctorate preferred.

· BSN or MSN required

· National Certification

· At least seven years of progressive experience in management and/or nursing management

· A high level of analytical ability is required.

· Ability to design complex clinical or administrative systems or programs

· Communication skills is required in order to lead, teach and persuade others

· Established reputation as a leader, consultant, and spokesperson for nursing

· The ability to check documents for errors, use a keyboard to enter or retrieve data.

Physical Demands:

· Work requires the ability to walk throughout the Medical Center and to be standing or walking most of the work day

· Work required lifting or carrying objects 35-40 lbs.

Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership:

· Actively engages in the development and implementation of the strategic plan for Nursing aligned with the strategic plan for the medical center.

· Determines opportunities to improve the value of care and services to patients and families.

· Identifies and supports community outreach, philanthropy and marketing initiatives that may enhance the development of new business or research opportunities.

· Actively provides nursing operations consultation and engagement at an institutional level for the Service Line/Groupings for the organization.

· Ensures the integration of service line planning into nursing resource management strategic planning and operational budgets.

· Promotes the development and implementation of inter-and intra-disciplinary research by staff and faculty.

· Contributes to the advancement of nursing through professional research and scholarly activities.

· Provides vision, direction and lead4rship to the department of nursing.

· Works collaboratively across organizational lines to facilitate hospital and nursing operations and ensure patient needs are met.

· Acts as a change agent and manages organizational change efforts to ensure operational effectiveness.

· Leads program planning, implementation and evaluation efforts for areas of responsibility both at a strategic and tactical level.

· Ensures ongoing personal development plan and provides management development and coaching for other members of the nursing team.

· Represents the medical center at state, local and national levels through involvement in professional associations and organization.

· Accountable for ensuring exceptional patient experience through patient centered initiatives and high levels of customer service.

· Facilitate the development and implementation of evidence based practice and quality efforts.

· Maintains an environment that promotes patient safety, high reliability of processes and quality outcomes.

· Participates in and complies with ongoing regulatory and accreditation readiness sustaining a working understanding of regulatory requirements and accreditation standards. Ensures areas of responsibility consistently meet these standards.

· Develops and oversees departmental budgets and assures financial accountability for annual operations and capital expenditures and budgets.

· Assures efficiencies in staffing and resource utilization by comparison with internal and external benchmarks as measured by productivity and cost per unit for areas of responsibility.

· Assure the availability of appropriately trained staff to deliver a high quality, consistent standard of nursing care.

· Assists with reviews, investigates, and follows-up on all work-related injuries/illnesses, to include: following-up on all blood borne pathogen incidents, reviewing all “Occupational Injury/Illness Reports for accuracy, consistency, and completeness, reviewing the incident with the employee’s supervisor and completing on-site investigations as necessary.

· Responsible for coordinating the maintenance of the Employee Health records by monitoring all new employee post-offer physicals, communicating with Human Resources and department managers, coordinating annual employee physicals and mandated screenings of all current employees and following confidentiality processes regarding Employee Health charts and counseling. Coordinating the annual influenza vaccination program, annual fit testing of N95 masks.

· Assists with coordinating the worker’s compensation insurance carrier to ensure that all necessary information and documentation (i.e., Form 45) is forwarded to them. Assures that appropriate rehabilitation of the injury or illness has occurred; acts as a patient advocate to the injured employee. Assures that employees return to work as soon as possible. Collaborates with the Employee Health Physician, Human Resources, and Risk Management regarding claims and medical treatment.

· Assists with coordinating the Restricted/Light Duty Program. Works with Human Resources, Risk Management, and department managers to place employee in limited duty positions. Evaluates whether the employee is functioning appropriately in any limited duty position (i.e., weekly reviews). Makes recommendations to Employee Health Physician, private physician, and therapist to determine employee’s functional capacity.

· Collaborates with other members of the health care team for the purpose of assessing, directing and evaluating treatment approaches, and improving the quality of care given.

· Demonstrates an ability to utilize RUMC resources and other health care agencies.

· Demonstrates leadership skills and excellent communication skills both written and verbal.

· Interprets RUMC policies and procedures

· Demonstrates the ability to direct learning experiences of staff and students.

· Develops, conducts and evaluates in-services utilizing internal and external educational resources.

· Identifies, for the unit, issues in education and practice that have not been attended to and makes recommendations for correcting these.
