VCA RIVER is seeking an experienced Veterinary Technician (LVMT preferred) to join our team as Technician & Assistant Shift Lead !

About the Role

As Shift Lead, you will lead and assist our technicians and assistants in planning and performing a variety of patient care, client education, and operational duties under direct supervision and guidance of the Veterinary Technician/Assistant Supervisor.

The Shift Lead will be empowered to lead independently while referring appropriate matters to the Supervisor. This is a full time position with a schedule of Friday, Saturday, and Sunday 8am - 8pm.

Primary Job Responsibilities

  • Train, supervise and assist technicians and assistants in the performance of a variety of technical skills and client education duties as directed by veterinarian

  • Provide guidance and direction to subordinates, including setting performance standards and evaluating performance

  • Mediate interpersonal matters and address minor concerns from technician and assistant team

  • Work and communicate directly with technician/assistant supervisor concerning personnel matters, training concerns, etc.

  • Ensure OSHA and DEA regulations and protocols are followed by all technicians and assistants in their department/on their shift

  • Maintain accurate medical records and observations

  • Be a role model for behavior and attitude on the floor

  • Supervise and train externs/interns

  • Perform technician duties including but not limited to:

  • Obtain and record patient histories

  • Collect specimens and perform routine laboratory procedures and tests.

  • Administer fluids and blood products prescribed by veterinarian

  • Dispense or administer medications, treatments, etc. as directed by veterinarian

  • Provide specialized nursing care to ill or injured patients

  • Prepare patients, instruments and equipment for surgery

  • Assist in diagnostic, medical and surgical procedures using diagnostic equipment such as x-ray, ultrasound, CT, Endoscopy and Fluoroscopy

  • Communicate with and educate owners on medication use, side effects and administration

  • Clean, maintain and sterilize instruments, equipment and materials

Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years veterinary technician/assistant experience. Work in a specialty or ER practice preferred

  • Graduate of AVMA Accredited veterinary technology/veterinary nursing degree program, state Veterinary Technician license (LVMT) preferred

  • Strong communication, collaboration, and leadership skills

  • Ability to be flexible, adjust to a changing environment and handle stress calmly

  • Attention to detail and willingness to question when unsure

  • Able to receive criticism professionally and take responsibility for actions

  • Active interest in veterinary medicine and animal care, continuous learning

Hourly pay varies based on experience, education, and credentials, with a $2/hr shift differential for weekend hours. Full time associates enjoy a comprehensive benefits package in addition to hourly compensation.
