Within DCF, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health (SAMH) Program office is recognized as the single state authority for substance abuse and mental health services. The Office of SAMH is statutorily responsible for the planning, evaluation, and implementation of a comprehensive statewide system of care for the prevention, treatment, and recovery of children and adults with serious mental illnesses or substance use disorders .
Florida State Hospital (FSH) is a mental health treatment facility owned and operated by the State of Florida and is part of the Department of Children and Families. THIS VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT MAY BE USED TO FILL MULTIPLE POSITIONS IN CIVIL AND FORENSIC.
This is a highly responsible and professional position that will serve as aLicensed Practical Nurse OPS. T his position will collaborate with each section within the state facilities and be required to use independent judgement, take initiative in carrying out duties and responsibilities and should be extraordinarily detail oriented.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities include:
This position requires lifting, pulling, and squatting. Duties of this position require the incumbent to be knowledgeable of and utilize the principles of Total Quality Management.
Administers medication and treatments as ordered. Checks medications for accuracy when returned from pharmacy following established unit dose policy/procedure. Administers treatments such as, but not limited to: sterile dressings, enemas, irrigations, catheterizations. Takes vital signs and assessments of residents, and assists staff in the care of residents.
Provides monitoring, supervision, and coordination of direct care staff regarding appropriate resident care and maintaining a therapeutic environment.
Assists in maintaining and completing resident records. Completes nursing progress notes and nursing summaries as required. Monitors charting compliance of direct care staff and reports deficiencies to immediate supervisor or designee.
Makes daily rounds with doctor when required. Makes routine rounds on wards, uses nursing skills to assess health status of residents, precautions for safety measures of residents such as bedside rails, chair and stretcher, and safety restraints.
Checks complaints of residents, notifies the registered nurse and/or physician when required.
Signs and carries out physician’s orders including faxing medication orders, fills out X-ray requisitions and other diagnostic procedure requests, completes diet slips, flow sheets, etc. Assists with maintaining accuracy of Kardex and incident reports and other forms and reports as necessary.
Keeps medical supply cabinets and treatment room stocked, clean, and orderly on a daily basis. Makes regular checks of medical equipment as assigned.
Attends unit meetings as required. Maintains compliance with unit and FSH mandatory inservice training.
Gives/receives report at beginning and end of shift. Maintains an accurate daily nursing report with information of occurrences during shift and new orders given.
Assists in admission, transfer, and discharge procedures of residents.
Performs other related duties.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required for the position:
Knowledge of nursing principles and techniques.
Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology.
Skill in the use of medical equipment and instruments used in providing nursing care.
Ability to demonstrate manual dexterity.

Ability to work with patients.

Ability to observe patients' symptoms and reactions to treatment.

Minimum Qualifications:
Licensure as a practical nurse in accordance with Florida Statute 464 or eligible to practice nursing in accordance with Florida Administrative Code 210-8.22 or 8.27 or a multi-state license under the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC) .
Preference will be given to applicants who have:
One year of nursing experience.
