University of Virginia Patient Care Technician (PCT) - Outpatient Surgery Center Post Op in Charlottesville, Virginia
$4,000.00 sign on bonus may be available for qualified candidates with a one-year work commitment, in accordance with UVA policy.
Performs a variety of patient care and administrative support functions under the supervision of a Medical Center Registered Nurse (RN) in an inpatient or outpatient setting.

We are located in the Battle Bldg. on the main campus across from the Medical Center, but connected by a walkway to both it, the Emily Couric Cancer Center, Educational Resource Center, and Pharmacy – along with 2 patient parking garages (Lee St and 11th St; staff parks off site and takes a shuttle in).
OPSC PACU supports 12 OR’s, with a daily census that ranges from 40-60+ patients per day. Our patient population ranges from pediatric to geriatric, with peds representing on average 20% but it varies widely on a weekly basis depending on the template. Of note for the pediatric population, we will also support their pre-operative needs on the day of surgery. The Surgical Services who perform procedures at OPSC are as follows: General Surgery, ENT, Orthopedics, OB/GYN, Urology, GI, neuro, pain, plastics, and hematology-oncology.
Hours of operation for the OR’s are 0730-1730 everyday except Wed, which starts at 0930 – No Nights, weekends, or holidays : ) Patients arrive at 0600(except wed) and all but 1-2 late cases will be discharged by 1930, depending on post-op recovery. Peds Pre-op staff arrive at 0600, with PACU staff arriving between 0730-1100, most working 10 hour shifts, with 8 and 12 hour shifts uncommon but considered on a case by case basis.
Assists patients with personal care as needed for optimal recovery during hospitalization.
Performs basic nursing skills as delegated by an RN and in accordance with policy and procedure to promote patient health and wellness.
Provides for a safe environment and safe delivery of care.
Performs administrative support functions.
Maintains necessary skills and competencies.
In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
Position Compensation Range: $15.37 - $23.82 Hourly
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education: High School Graduate or Equivalent
Experience: No experience required
Licensure: American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider BLS Certification required.
Certified to practice as a Nurse Aide in the Commonwealth of Virginia OR must meet one of the following criteria (required):
(1) Successful completion of the UVa PCT Education Program OR Successful completion of another PCT Education Program that has been approved by NPDS.
(2) Documented proof of at least 1 year of recent (within past 2 years) experience in a similar PCT role from an outside institution. Candidate must successfully complete a written exam and must successfully demonstrate clinical skills during 6 month probationary period.
(3) Passage of a nationally recognized and accredited PCT Certification exam. (Example - National Healthcareer Association - C-PCT). Present Certificate as verification.
OR must meet one of the following criteria (required):
(1) Currently enrolled student nurses who have successfully completed the Medical/Surgical Clinical Experience and Didactic are exempt from the Certified Nurse Aide requirement.
(2) EMT or above certification. Candidate will complete the UVA PCT Course within 6 month probationary period
(3) Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Job requires frequently bending/stooping and driving (Home Health Aide only). Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 20 – 50lbs and > 100lbs (Home Health Aide only). May be exposed to chemicals, blood/body fluids and infectious disease
