University of Virginia Assistant Professor of History in Charlottesville, Virginia

The University of Virginia’s Corcoran Department of History invites applications for a tenure-track position, at the Assistant Professor rank, in Late Imperial Chinese History (the Ming-Qing period), expected to begin August 2025. Scholars of this field in all areas of expertise are welcome to apply. The successful candidate will join a vibrant department of more than forty scholars covering various areas and periods of the world and a thriving program in East Asian history from ancient to modern times. The Department is particularly interested in developing research and teaching offerings with transnational or global reach and in the areas of women and gender studies and the histories of science/technology and medicine.

The teaching load is two courses per semester plus possibility of supervising graduate students, and the duties also include service to the Department, the University, and the profession.

To meet the minimum qualifications for this position, applicants should hold a PhD.

Candidates must have received a PhD in history or a related field by the position start date. A strong record of original and innovative research and professionally proficient Chinese language ability are expected. Candidates should demonstrate the potential for excellence in teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and for mentoring students, as well as a demonstrated willingness to contribute to the goals of the University and the scholarly life of the Department and the PhD program. Candidates should be able to teach Department survey courses on Late Imperial and Modern China, as well as additional courses in their area of specialization.
