Research Group Head - Advanced Manufacturing and Circularity

Role Overview: We are seeking a dynamic leader to head our research group within the Technology Field of “Advanced Manufacturing and Circularity” at Siemens Foundational Technologies. This role is akin to leading a small start-up, focusing on building a robust portfolio, aligning with Siemens business units, and evolving the team’s capabilities to execute projects on time and within budget.

This research group provides pre-development and research services including prototyping, technology evaluation, and assessments in many areas of Advanced Digital Manufacturing . We are demonstrating the complete toolchain needed for advanced manufacturing including closed-loop control, shop-floor-specific robotics, and industrialization of Siemens hardware and software for motion control and automation. The team, embedded into the Siemens Energy Campus in Charlotte, provides tremendous opportunities because digitalization solutions using the Siemens PLM software applications in combination with new technologies can be developed and quickly tested in a real productive environment. The group also collaborates strongly with other teams in the US and globally on topics like Materials, Manufacturing, Automation Technologies, Simulation, Digital Twin, and Artificial Intelligence.

In this role, you will work on-site at our Charlotte, NC facility.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership: Lead a research group providing pre-development and research services, including prototyping, technology evaluation, and assessments in Advanced Digital Manufacturing.

  • Innovation: Demonstrate the complete toolchain for advanced manufacturing, including closed-loop control, shop-floor specific robotics, Additive Manufacturing, and industrialization of Siemens hardware and software for motion control and automation.

  • Collaboration: Work closely with other teams in the US and globally on topics like Materials, Manufacturing, Automation Technologies, Simulation, Digital Twin, and Artificial Intelligence.

  • Digitalization: Develop and test digitalization solutions using Siemens PLM software applications in a real productive environment.

Research Focus:

  • Circular Economy: Develop tools and products for an efficient and transparent circular economy, from eco-design to proper recycling, tracking the entire product lifecycle and all its value-added stages. Focus on the circular economy of rare earth elements/critical materials essential for clean energy production, aircraft electric and hybrid vehicles, low-energy lighting, and more.

  • Synergistic Development: Leverage concurrent areas of recycling, design/simulation, and validation testing of recycled materials to improve REE/CM extraction from domestic sources, particularly end-of-life batteries and manufacturing scrap.

The Candidate:

Basic Qualifications

  • PhD or Masters degree from an accredited university.

  • 8+ years of experience: At least 8 years of experience as a researcher and engineer in advanced manufacturing, with a proven track record in academia, industry, or military/government.

  • 3+ Years of Supervisory Experience : Minimum of 3 years of supervisory experience or program/project management engagement leading teams in an R&D environment.

  • Proven Leadership Skills : Demonstrated ability to lead a research group, manage a budget exceeding $5 million, and guide up to 10 researchers and project managers.

  • Expertise in Advanced Manufacturing : Deep understanding of advanced manufacturing processes, including closed-loop control, robotics, additive manufacturing, and Siemens hardware/software for motion control and automation.

  • Ability to Travel : Willingness and ability to travel up to 30% of the time, both domestically and internationally.

  • Legal Authorization: You must be able to work in the United States on a continual and permanent basis without company sponsorship

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in Engineering or Computer Science : A PhD or equivalent experience in a relevant engineering or computer science field.

  • Experience with Circular Economy Initiatives : Familiarity with developing tools and products for a circular economy, particularly in the context of rare earth elements and critical materials.

  • Collaboration with Academic and Research Institutions : Proven ability to develop and maintain relationships with universities and research institutes to expand technology portfolios and pursue public funding opportunities.

  • Digital Twin and Simulation Expertise : Experience in developing and testing digitalization solutions using Siemens PLM software applications in a productive environment.

  • Knowledge of Additive Manufacturing : Hands-on experience with additive manufacturing processes and technologies.

  • Global Collaboration Skills : Ability to work effectively with teams across different countries and cultures, particularly in areas like Materials, Manufacturing, Automation Technologies, and Artificial Intelligence.

  • Innovation in Advanced Manufacturing : Demonstrated ability to innovate and drive advancements in advanced manufacturing technologies, including robotics and automation.

The pay range for this position is $133,000 - $228,000. The actual wage offered may be lower or higher depending on budget and candidate experience, knowledge, skills, qualifications, and premium geographic location.
