Performs a variety of patient testing and administrative tasks in support of the clinical activities in the UNCHCS.
This position has responsibilities in the following sections of the laboratory - Central Processing, Bacteriology, and Special Microbiology sections of the laboratory. The Special Microbiology section consists of Mycobacteriology, Mycology, Parasitology, and Sendouts. Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: Direct specimen processing and direct specimen Gram stains Rapid antigen testing – Cdiff, Strep, Legionella, Trichomonas, Mono, Crypto Rapid molecular/PCR testing – RSV, Flu, Cdiff, Gram Positive Susceptibility COVID testing Total Lab Automation instrumentation (BD Kiestra), plate reading and organism ID Susceptibility testing – automated and KB Quality control of instruments, reagents, and media.
Hours (other schedule options can be discussed at interview):
Monday-Friday 1:00pm-9:30pm OR 3:00pm-11:30pm, rotating weekends (every 4th) and holidays.
Thursday-Sunday OR Wednesday-Saturday: 10:00am OR 11:00am start, 8:30pm or 9:30pm end time and rotating holidays
Responsibilities:
Investigates problems with equipment, test results, specimens, and/or workflow.
May participate on teams or perform special projects/assignments.
May perform teaching of Clinical Laboratory Science students and Pathology residents and training of new employees. May serve as a technical resource.
Performs quality control and equipment maintenance in the appropriate laboratory.
Performs routine and less standardized test procedures which includes special chemical, microscopic and bacteriologic laboratory tests. Observes tests and reactions and provides data.
Prepares specimens and reagents, solutions, heat, or filters as required.
Reports results to healthcare providers. Consults/confers with health care providers regarding test results.
Reviews test results to ensure accuracy of report and timely correction of errors.

Education Requirements:
● Requires Bachelor's of Science degree. Must meet eligibility requirements upon hire to sit for MT exam within 12 months of hire.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
● Must obtain certification within one year of becoming exam eligible.
Professional Experience Requirements:
● No prior experience required.
