Description

The Public Transportation Driver reports to The Arc Mid-Hudson’s Transportation Supervisor under the guidelines of the Greene County Transit contract, must exhibit a high degree of competence and responsibility for the safety of passengers being transported. This occupation must be performed in a professional manner and in accordance with all the regulations specified in the New York State Vehicle & Traffic Law. This person performing this position must have good oral and written communication skills, customer service, patience, decision-making skills, the ability to operate efficiently and adhere to a strict timetable.

  • Drivers must remain in compliance with FTA, NYS DOT and Article 19A of the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles that govern all public transportation requirements.

  • Provides behind-the-wheel training to new non-CDL drivers. May provide other training to assist with new drivers.

  • Will evaluate runs and roadway conditions and report back to Transportation Supervisor.

  • Will perform driving skills to prevent accidents and promote safety.

  • Must pass yearly physical fitness test as required by the Federal Transit Administration and NYS DMV 19-A.

  • Must pass yearly NYS DMV19-A road test and written CDL comprehensive test as required by NYS 19-A.

  • Must maintain an acceptable driving record that meets the minimum standard of NYS DMV 19-A driver qualifications.

  • Will be subjected to Drug and Alcohol testing that meets the standards of the program requirements.

  • Must perform pre/post trip inspections of assigned vehicle.

  • Responsible for the cleanliness of vehicle.

  • Responsible for notifying Transportation Supervisor no later than the next working day after receiving a summons for a motor vehicle moving violation, or being involved in a reportable motor vehicle collision. This notification responsibility is required even if the incident occurs in the driver's personal, rented, or borrowed vehicle.

  • Responsible for the successful completion of training courses as scheduled by Transportation Services.

  • Responsible for the safe passage, comfort and proper supervision of passengers being transported between assigned points.

  • Responsible for bringing ill and/or injured passengers that receive services from The Arc of Mid-Hudson to the nurse’s office upon arrival at the Agency in the morning, or before embarking in the afternoon.

  • Responsible for completing the Agency’s Incident Report as required by the Quality Assurance policy.

  • Responsible for completing Transportation Services Vehicle Collision Report for all vehicle collisions.

  • Will be required to wear a uniform. Driver will maintain the cleanliness and professional appearance of their uniform.

  • Ability to follow a regular route on a time schedule.

  • Deal with unruly passengers in a calm and professional manner.

  • Demonstrate regular and consistent attendance and punctuality.

  • Announce next destination.

  • Answer questions about schedules, routes and transfer points.

  • Report accidents or other traffic disruptions to a central dispatcher and follow directions when using an alternate route.

  • Assist disabled passengers.

  • Collect fares and sell tickets.

  • Must be able to operate a wheelchair lift, properly tie down a wheelchair using securements and operate any other attachments to the vehicle.

  • Drive transit vehicles in difficult weather conditions.

  • Report emergency situations, delays or mechanical problems with the bus to the supervisor.

  • Make decisions to accommodate reasonable modifications for safe passage of passengers.

  • May be required to perform other transportation related duties as deemed necessary by supervisor. These duties may include, but are not limited to, clerical work and minor vehicle repairs.

    Essential Minimum Physical Demand Job Requirements:

  • Employee must be able to meet the demands of vehicle operations but not limited to push, pull and/or lift 50lbs.

  • Must be able to pass a FTA DOT physical fitness test annually.

  • Must be able to pass a drug and alcohol pre-employment and submit to random drug and alcohol testing.

  • Must be able to utilize standard office equipment; access filing system/cabinets; and communicate effectively, clearly and efficiently in person, by telephone, in writing or CB radio.

  • Be fully able to drive company vehicle to hold a route and passenger guidance

    Must be able to:

  • Sit and stand for extended periods of time.

  • Reach below waist height to assist individuals.

  • Squat/ half-kneel to remove / reinstall footrests on wheel chairs, and secure wheelchairs within vehicles.

    As a Public Transportation Driver, the employee may be exposed to slip and trip hazards, inclement weather, and unpredictable driving conditions.

    HOURS: 40/Monday through Friday/variable split shifts, according to route schedule

    STARTING SALARY: $ 22.12 to $ 24.34 per hour -- with CDL w/Passenger Endorsement

Minimum Requirements

  • Must have a valid New York State driver’s license that meets the insurable criteria of the Agency’s automobile insurance company.

  • NYS CDL A, B, or C driver’s license with Passenger Endorsement.

  • Must meet NYS DMV 19-A Certification requirements.

  • One (1) or more years driving experience.

  • Computer literate and able to learn appropriate reporting programs

  • Experience working with individuals with developmental disability preferred.
